Dordt Football Host Dakota State Saturday

THE FOE… Dakota State is 1-7 this season and is competing as an NAIA Independent for the second season.  The Trojans earned their first win of the season last week on the road at Briar Cliff by a 35-28 mark.  Dordt is the final GPAC team Dakota State will face, having played six other GPAC teams already.

The Trojans have been outscored 299-159 this season and have given up 28 points or more in each of their games this season.  Teams have gained 1,884 yards on the ground against Dakota State and have passed for 1,653 yards.  Dakota State has 961 yards of rushing offense and rank fourth in the nation in total passing offense.

Brandon Large is 162-275 passing this season for 2,086 yards and 13 touchdowns and 260.8 yards per game.  Large has thrown eight interceptions.  His favorite target is Stacey Berg with 34 catches and a 21.8 yards per catch average.  Curtis Carl has 32 catches for a 12.1 average and Bobby Tisch has a 12.6 yards per catch average and 31 catches.  Zach Ely has 21 catches and a 15.9 average. Berg leads the unit with six touchdowns.
John Niesen has 112 carries for 342 yards and Kris Dearie has 50 carries for 214 yards of rushing offense.
Nic Behrens has punted 49 times for a 38.1 average.

Eric Liles has 25 solo tackles to go with 57 assists and Craig Hertz is at 32 solo and 40 assisted stops.  Preston Powell and Matt Groff have 16 and 19 solo tackles respectively.

THE DEFENDERS…The Defenders are 0-6 in the league and 0-7 overall.  Dordt has been outscored 246-100 this season while outgaining teams 215-185 on the ground but have been outgained 3056-2266 overall.  Dordt has struggled with turnovers this season, committing 25 turnovers while forcing 11 turnovers.

Trai Pickney has gained 383 yards on the ground and averages 7.2 yards per carry.  Daniel Fennig has 271 yards rushing and gains 6.6 yards per  attempt.  Lenard Manuel also has 247 yards rushing and Josh Van Kempen 190.  Kyle Henricks has run for 108 yards and has completed 43-92 passes for 606 yards.  David Griess and Trai Pickney have 15 and 13 receptions respectively with Griess gaining 11.4 yards per catch and Pickney 17.0 yards per reception.

Heath Bonestroo has been handling the punting chores and has 15 kicks for a 41.1 yards per punt.

Seth Vande Voort has 41 solo tackles and 31 assisted stops with Vanoy Harris getting credit for 37 solo tackles and 23 assisted stops with one fumble recovery.  Sam Ashmore has 31 solo tackles with 11 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.  Raymond Cleveland leads the team with three interceptions and has 32 solo tackles to his credit.

THE LAST TIME THEY PLAYED… Dakota State scored a touchdown with less than two minutes left and beat Briar Cliff 35-28 on Saturday, October 16. Dakota State had 484 yards on offense and had 317 in the air while surrendering 386 yards and 291 through passes.   Niesen ran for 154 yards on 36 attempts and Large completed 27-40 passes for 317 yards.  Tisch caught eight passes for 86 yards.  Curtis and Berg both had four catches and a touchdown each.

Dordt was done in by three early turnovers that put them behind 21-0 on Saturday after an interception was returned  for a touchdown and two fumbles set up touchdown drives of 31 and 13 yards respectively.  Dordt got on the board with an Erin Francis two yard touchdown run with 9:10 left to go in the half.  Daniel Fennig ran for 34 yards on eight carries and Kyle Henricks had eight pass completions.  Seth Vande Voort and Sam Ashmore each had seven solo tackles and Vanoy Harris had six solo stops.

HISTORY… This is the second time Dordt and Dakota State are playing.  Dordt beat the Trojans last season by a 40-20 margin after leading 13-12 at halftime.  Barry Dykstra hit a pair of 29 yard field goals in the first quarter and Sam Du Mez caught a 30 yard touchdown pass to pu the Defenders up 13-0.  Three straight touchdowns by Daniel Fennig put the Defenders firmly in control and Fennig ran for a fourth touchdown with 3:32 left in the game for the final of 40-20. Dordt outgained Dakota State 455-200 with Fennig running for 171 yards on 29 carries.  Justin Knot completed 15-30 passes for 208 yards.  Dakota State got 52 yards rushing from Jeb Olsen and Brandon Large had 23 yards on 11 carries.  Large was 14-29 in the air for 108 yards.

Seth Vande Voort had seven solo and four assisted stops  while Aaron Hicks had three and three.  Anthony Hallum picked off a pass.  Eric Liles was the leading tackler along with Alex Waba for Dakota State with three solo and eight assisted tackles.  Matt Groff and Dana Felderman both had an interception.

AROUND THE CORNER… Dordt will travel to Morningside on Saturday, October 27.  Dakota State will host Jamestown that same day in Madison, South Dakota.
