Blades to Play Two on Home Ice Against Kansas

October 18, 2012

Game time…the Dordt College Blades will play host to the University of Kansas Jayhawks on Friday, October 19 and 20.  The start time for Friday night will be 7:30 pm in the Vernon Arena with Saturday’s contest scheduled to begin at 4:15 pm.

New conference affiliation…after spending one year as an independent school in the ACHA, the Dordt Blades have joined the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association.

The MACHA has schools in two separate divisions (Gold and Silver) and Dordt College will be a part of the Silver Division.  With the addition of three new schools (Lewis, Nebraska and Dordt) and Kansas being moved from Gold to Silver the MACHA elected to form a Western Conference, of which Dordt will be a part.

Schools in the West will include:  Iowa, Iowa State, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Missouri State (D3), Kansas, Nebraska and Dordt.

The top two teams from the North, Central and West will make the playoffs, plus 2 wild card spots decided on winning percentage.  Lewis, Western Illinois, Nebraska and Dordt are all probationary teams and therefore will not be eligible for playoffs in 2012-2013.

"This is a very solid and well run organization," stated Dordt Head Coach Bill Elgersma, "it is highly structured and extremely professional and we anticipate being full members in 2013-2014."

Scouting Report…the Jayhawks, who play in Division 2 of the ACHA, come in to Sioux Center with a record of 0-2 with both losses coming at the hands of the Iowa State Cyclones.  Iowa State dropped Kansas 9-1 and 9-0 in a pair of games played in late September.

Austin Perry has the lone goal for the visiting Jayhawks while Vic Greenberg picked up the assist. Peter Seward and TJ Berk have each had one game between the pipes for Kansas with both netminders sharing almost identical statistics; both  posted a goals against average of 9.00 and a .840 save percentage with Seward making 47 saves in his lone appearance while Berk picked up 46 saves.

The Jayhawks finished the 2011-2012 season with a record of 1-20 and were outscored by a 172-37 margin. Schilar Kessler topped the Jayhawks in scoring last year with 17 points on 10 goals and 7 assists.

The Blades…who will skate on their home ice for the first time this weekend, are also 0-2 with losses to Aquinas and Calvin.  The Blades fell to Aquinas 2-1 in their first of two games played in the Calvin Invitational before losing to Calvin 6-1 the following day.  The Blades also played an exhibition game the morning of October 6 against Redeemer College (Ontario).

Nic Enerson and Andrew De Young both have a goal for the Blades with Dylan Van Dyk adding a point with one assist.

Junior netminder Riley Braun has 120 minutes of action in goal for Dordt College with a 4.00 goals against average and a save percentage of .890.  Braun is averaging 33 saves per contest.

“The weekend at Calvin was a good opener.  Two of the three games could have been Ws”, noted Dordt Head Coach Bill Elgersma.  “The great thing about the weekend is watching what our team has the potential to become.  We believe in ourselves and in each other.  The team plays with an attitude that believes they are competitors and they can score goals and deny scoring opportunities. We are excited that that attitude has returned.”

The Blades finished the 2011-2012 season with a record of 6-17-2-1 and they return 4 of their top 5 scorers from last season.  Brandon Fast paced the Blades with 28 points (13 goals, 15 assists), Eric Huitsing led the team in goals with 17 to go along with 10 assists for 27 points and Eric Grootenboer (10 goals, 3 assists) and Andrew De Young (2 goals, 11 assists) both had 13 points.

The Series…the Blades squared off with Kansas twice last year with the Blades picking up an 8-3 win in their first game while the Jayhawks grabbed a victory with a 3-2 final the following day.

After This Weekend…the Blades will travel to Colorado for three games.  On Thursday, October 25 Dordt College will play Colorado State in Fort Collins at 9:30 pm.  Friday, October 27 the Blades will head to Boulder to skate against Colorado at 5:15 pm before finishing off their road trip with a 10:00 pm contest in Littleton, Colorado on Saturday, October 27 with Metro State.

The Coaches…Bill Elgersma returns for his fourth season behind the bench for the Blades.  Elgersma helped lead the Blades to their 3rd ACHA National Tournament appearance in 2009-2010.  Before taking over the reins in 2009-2010, Elgersma served as the assistant coach.

Assisting Elgersma again this season will be Adam Jeninga (6th year) and John Langeraap (4th year).
