Defenders Third In National Poll

(Wednesday, October 24; Sioux Center, Iowa)  The Dordt College Defender men’s basketball team holds the No. 3 spot in the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll announced late Tuesday by the NAIA national office.

The Defenders earned 327 total points and two first place votes in balloting done by a panel of coaches representing each of the conferences and independent schools.

Dordt finished the 2011-12 season with a 30-5 record and advanced to the NAIA Division II National Tournament quarterfinal round.  The Defenders were ranked No. 5 in the final poll of last season.  Dordt opens the season on the road Tuesday, October 30 when it travels to No. 13 Bellevue.  The Defenders open the home portion of the season on Friday, November 2 against Jamestown and will face Valley City State on Saturday, November 3.  Jamestown is receiving votes in the poll and Valley City State is No. 24.

Northwood (Florida), the 2012 national runner-up, and Oregon Tech, the 2012 champion, earned the No. 1 and No. 2 pre-season ranking.  The two teams were separated by on point with Northwood taking 332 points and Oregon Tech 331.

Fellow GPAC members in the poll are Northwestern at No. 7 while Midland and Morningside are in the receiving votes category.
