Dordt Basketball Opens Season

GAMETIME...Dordt College will travel to Bellevue, Nebraska to face the Bellevue Bruins on Tuesday night, October 30 in a non-conference game.  The game will tip off at 7:00.

SCOUTING REPORT… Bellevue opens the season as the no. 13 team in the country.  Last season the Bruins were 28-6 and finished the year in the second round of the NAIA National Tournament. 

The Bruins have advanced to the NAIA National Tournament ten straight seasons and enter this season with several unknowns, returning just three players who saw time last year.  Blake Zamudio appeared in 33 games last season and averaged 6.3 points per game for a team that put up 83.7 points per game and allowed 66.3.  Derrick Davis played in all 34 games last season, one of five players to achieve that feat for Shane Paben.  Davis averaged 4.2 points per game and made 59 percent of his field goals with 2.4 rebounds per game.  Olutoloa Olushola averaged 2.0 points per game while playing in 26 games.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt returns eight players who played in at least 33 games last season as the Defenders finished the year with a school record 30 wins while posting a 30-5 mark.  Dordt advanced to the NAIA Division II National Tournament where they advanced to the quarterfinal round.  The Defenders open this season in the no. 3 slot in the pre-season NAIA Coaches’ Poll and they are the pre-season pick in the GPAC.

Leading the returners are four double digit scorers from a team that scored 81 points per game and allowed 70.1 points per outing.  Trevor Wolterstorff averaged 14.9 points per game while earning NAIA All-American accolades.  He made 58.9 percent of his field goals and grabbed 5.2 rebounds per game.  Cliff Warner scored 13.4 points per game and averaged over four assists per game while making 90-191 three-point tries.  Jordan Vogel tossed in 13.1 points per game with 6.7 rebounds and converted 57.6 percent of his field goals.  Chris Sievers scored 11.5 points per game with 4.5 rebounds and he was good for 62.7 percent shooting.  Austin Katje added 9.9 points per game and converted 60-160 three-point tries.  Kyle Lindbergh scored 8.2 points per game and had a 6.8 rebounding average.  Shawn Keizer and Tyler Wolterstorff averaged 3.7 and 4.3 points per game respectively.

HISTORY… Dordt College leads the series 13-7 with the teams last playing on November 28 in Sioux Center.  Dordt prevailed in that game 76-70 with Shawn Keizer scoring 21.  Michael Eekhoff had 15 points and nine rebounds while Logan Kingma scored 14 and added five rebounds.  Bellevue was led by Avery Tyler with 19 points and Aaryon Williams added 12.

LAST TIME OUT… Bellevue bowed out to St. Francis (Indiana) at the national tournament  second round by a 61-58 margin.  Bellevue trailed 34-19 at halftime but made a frantic comeback but couldn’t hang on to win.  Richard Shepherd and James Parrott each had 12 points and Austin Bowen tossed in 13 in a reserve role.

Dordt lost an 82-78 game to McPherson in the quarterfinal round of the national tournament.  The Defenders were up 35-32 late but couldn’t hold a late lead in closing their season.  Cliff Warner had 24 points and was named to the National Tournament all-tournament team.  Trevor Wolterstorff and Chris Sievers each had 13 points with Wolterstorff getting seven rebounds and Sievers six.  The game was one of the few times Dordt was outrebounded last season, losing the board tally 37-30. 

NEXT… Bellevue will play in a classic hosted by York College in York, Nebraska on Friday and Saturday, November 2 and 3 against Tabor and Concordia (Nebraska).

RANKINGS…. The Defenders are no. 3 in the national poll while Northwestern out of the GPAC is no. 7.  Midland and Morningside are receiving votes in the polling.
