Dordt Football Hosts Doane

ON THE DOCKET… Dordt College will host its final home football game of the season on Saturday, November 3 when the Defenders welcome Doane College to Sioux Center. THE FOE… The Doane Tigers are no.24 in the most recent NAIA Coaches’ Poll and stand 4-3 in the GPAC and 5-3 overall.  The Tigers have outscored teams 230-173 this season and have outgained teams 370.5-329.8 in yardage per game.  The Tigers snapped a two game losing skid with a win over Hastings in their most recent outing.  The losses for Doane this season are to Northwestern, Morningside and Dakota Wesleyan. Doane has forced 20 turnovers and has given the football up 15 times.

Clayton Moore has 85 carries and 401 yards for a 4.7 yards per carry average and Alex Dose has gained 318 yards on the ground on 84 carries for a 3.8 average.  Jeff Weander has completed 158 passes in 280 attempts with nine interceptions and 15 touchdowns.  Weander has thrown for 215 yards per game and his favorite target is Tyrone Curry with 39 receptions and a 17.7 yards per catch average and eight touchdowns.  Jesse Ver Velde has 33 catches with an 11.8 average and Nolan Kawata has 30 grabs for 6.6 yards per.

Brett Eyer handles the punting with a 34.7 yards per punt average and Phil Thramer is 3-11 on field goals with a long of 46 and he is 11-13 on point after attempts.  Christian Iannone is 16-18 on point after attempts.

Jeremy Wallace has 41 solo and 55 assisted stops for the defense while Joe Knott has 28 solo and 34 assisted tackles.  Wallace has a team high six sacks and Knott has 2.5 and Wallace tops the team with 14 tackles for loss.  Vince Martinez leads the team with four interceptions and Fabian Varela has three sacks.  Six other Tiger players have interceptions for a defense that has forced 20 turnovers.

THE DEFENDERS…Dordt is 1-8 overall and 0-7 in league play with a win over Dakota State to its credit.  Dordt has been outscored 32.7-13.8 per game while gaining 209 yards on the ground and surrendering 175 yards on the ground.  The Defenders have completed 63 passes over the course of the season for 837 yards and opponents gain about 257 yards in the air against Dordt.  The Defenders have committed 34 turnovers and opponents have committed 17.

Trai Pickney has gained 484 yards on the ground on 63 carries for a 7.7 yards per carry average with four touchdowns.  Daniel Fennig has rushed for 353 yards and has a 6.9 yards per carry average.  Lenard Manuel and Josh Van Kempen have 67 and 77 carries respectively for 4.8 and 3.2 yards per carry average.    David Griess has 16 receptions for a 14.1 average and Trai Pickney has 13 catches for a 17.0 yards per catch average.  Kyle Henricks, who missed the last game with an injury, is 44-101 passing for 660 yards.  Barry Dykstra has made 2-5 field goals with a long of 29 and he has converted 14-15 point after tries.  Heath Boonestroo has punted 25 times with a 38.5 average and Darryl Van Grouw has punted 19 times for a 36.8 average.

Seth Vande Voort leads the defense with 53 solo tackles and 48 assisted stops and he has two sacks.  Sam Ashmore has 41 solo tackles and 34 assisted stops and leads the team with 13 tackles for loss.  Vanoy Harris has 44 solo stops and 28 assists.  Raymond Cleveland leads the team with three interceptions and has 46 solo stops.  Jon Gardner leads the team with three fumble recoveries and two fumble recoveries.

THE LAST TIME THEY PLAYED… Doane beat Hastings on Saturday, October 27 in Crete, Nebraska by a final score of 48-16.  Doane outgained Hastings 480-312 with Jeff Weander completing 16-25 passes for 183 yards and four touchdowns.  Alex Dose had 18 carries for 78 yards and Clayton Moore had ten carries for 59 yards.  Tyrone Curry caught four passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns.  Rob Keeney had six solo tackles and five assisted stops and blocked a kick.  Doane led 28-9 at the end of the first half.

The Defenders lost a 41-0 decision to Morningside on Saturday after trailing 14-0 at halftime.  Dordt was outgained 415-117 with Daniel Fennig gaining 37 yards on seven carries and Manuel had 33 yards on 11 carries.  Caleb Leuzinger completed 5-10 passes for 24 yards.  Seth Vande Voort had nine solo tackles with eight assists and had a sack.  Sam Ashmore had seven solo tackles with five assists and Ray Cleveland had six solo tackles while forcing a fumble.

HISTORY… Doane beat Dordt last season by a 63-26 margin and the Tigers are 4-0 against the Defenders over the course of the series.  The Tigers led last years game 42-14 at halftime and had 295 yards passing and 488 total yards to Dordt’s 366.  The Defenders’ Justin Knot was 9-15 in the air for 170 yards.  David Griess caught five passes for 63 yards and Alex Brabon had four catches for 55 yards.  Alex Dose piled up 141 yards for the Tigers with 22 carries and Anthony Dunn passed for 237 yards on 16-23 completions.  Jeremiah Saffold had four catches for 81 yards.  Austin Bosma led the Dordt defense with six solo and seven assisted stops while Jeremy Wallace had eight solo stops for the Tigers.

AROUND THE CORNER… Doane will host Concordia next Saturday while the Defenders are on the road to Orange City to face Northwestern to conclude the season.
