Dordt-Northwestern Football Saturday

THE FOE… Northwestern stands 6-2 in the league and 8-2 overall with losses to Morningside and Concordia.  Northwestern has won three in a row since the 17-16 loss to Concordia which put them on the bubble for a post-season NAIA berth in the 16-team playoff series.  The other loss is to Morningside by a 34-7 margin.  Northwestern started the season hovering around the top-10 in the nation and is currently no. 14.

Northwestern has outscored teams 362-150 this season for a 36.2-15.0 average.  The Raiders gain 267.9 yards per game on the ground and allow 92.5.  Kyle Achterhoff’s team throws for 208.7 yards per game and opponents have thrown for 154.9.  Northwestern has turned the ball over 24 times to 20 times for opponents. 

Brandon Smith and Theo Bartman have each run for over 1,000 yards at 1,230 and 1,014 respectively.  Smith’s yards per carry average is 6.8 and Bartman’s is 7.2.  Davis Bloemendaal is 134-230 in the air for 1,807 yards and has 16 touchdown passes with four interceptions.    Bartman is the top receiver with 39 catches for a 13.2 yards per catch average.  Tyler Walker has 24 catches for 19.7 yards per catch and four touchdowns.  Eli Groenendyk and Brice Byker each have 20 catches for a little over 12 yards per catch each.  Byker has four touchdown receptions and Groenendyk three. 

Mike O’Brien has made 5-9 field goals with a long of 46 and he has converted 32-42 point after attempts.  Nathan De Hoyos has punted for a 36.9 average.

Nate Fischer has 41 solo tackles and 27 assisted stops with 3.5 sacks and Isaiah  Twitty has 39 solo and 30 assisted stops with four sacks. Jordan Carlson leads the team with nine sacks and Ethan Lensch has three interceptions to lead the Raiders.

THE DEFENDERS…Dordt College is 0-8 in league play and 1-9 overall with a win over Dakota State.  Dordt has been shutout once this season, a 41-0 loss to Morningside.  The Defenders have been outscored 34.9-13.0 per game this season while gaining 201.6 yards per game on the ground and 90.1 in the air.  Opponents have run for 180 yards per game and passed for another 262 per outing.  Dordt has turned it over 39 times to 18 times for opponents.

Trai Pickney has run for 560 yards for a 7.5 yards per carry average with five touchdowns on the ground.  Daniel Fennig has run for 361 yards and a 6.7 yards per carry average and Lenard Manuel has 346 yards  on 71 carries. Kyle Henricks is 44-101 through the air for 660 yards in eight games but has not played for a couple weeks while dealing with an injury.  Caleb Leuzinger is 10-27 passing in the last two games.  David Griess is the top pass catcher with 17 and has a 13.8 yards per catch average.  Pickney has 15 catches for 17.0 yards per snag. 

Barry Dykstra is 2-5 on field goals with a long of 29 and is 14-16 on point after attempts.  Heath Bonestroo has 33 punts for a 38.3 average.

Seth Vande Voort tops the team with 56 solo and 52 assisted stops and has two sacks.  Sam Ashmore has 46 solo tackles with 39 assists and Vanoy Harris has been in on 50 solo and 30 assisted stops.  Jon Gardner has three sacks and two fumble recoveries.  Ray Cleveland tops the team with three interceptions and has 52 solo tackles and 24 assisted stops.

THE LAST TIME THEY PLAYED… Northwestern beat Hastings 45-6 after getting up 31-6 at halftime.  Northwestern ran for 233 yards and passed for 292 and outgained the Broncos 525-236.  Bloemendaal passed for 292 yards on 19-27 success.  Smith and Bartman had 122 and 120 yards respectively.  Eli Groenendyk caught five balls for 92 yards and Bartman had four catches for 59 yards.  Dillon Green had six solo tackles and Jake Zylstra had three solo and four assisted stops.

Dordt was on the short end of a 55-6 loss to Doane on Saturday, November 3 in Sioux Center.  Dordt scored first on a Trai Pickney 14 yard touchdown run but the Tigers had a 17-6 lead at halftime and scored 31 points in the second half.  Dordt was limited to 130 yards on the ground and 63 yards in the air while Doane ran for 225 yards and had 534 yards total.  Trai Pickney had 12 carries for 76 yards and caught two balls for 34 yards.  Ashmore had five solo and five assisted stops while Harris had six solo and two assisted stops. 

HISTORY… Northwestern leads the series 4-0 and won last year’s meeting 45-28.  Dordt led 14-10 with 5:37 left in the first half but allowed four touchdowns before the half ended to take a 38-14 lead into the half.  Dordt outscored Northwestern 14-7 in the second half for the final 17 point difference. Northwestern outgained Dordt 509-327 with Brandon Smith running for 216 yards on 30 carries.  Bloemendaal was 18-25 passing for 207 yards and Tyler Walker caught seven passes for 80 yards.  Daniel Fennig ran for 117 yards for the Defenders on 20 totes and Justin Knot was 13-30 passing for 191 yards.  Pickney caught four passes for 45 yards and Griess had three catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.  Fennig scored twice on the ground.

AROUND THE CORNER…This will conclude the Dordt College season while Northwestern awaits a potential at-large berth in the NAIA playoff field announced on Sunday, November 11.
