All-GPAC Football Honors Announced

(Tuesday, November 13; Sioux Center, Iowa) Several Dordt College Defender football players were named all-GPAC honorable mention selections in the post-season honors process by the conference coaches.

Owen Reinalda (Senior; Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania), Trai Pickney (Sophomore;  Carrolton, Texas), Seth Vande Voort (Junior; Urbandale, Iowa), Sam Ashmore (Junior; Arlington, Texas), Ray Cleveland (Junior; Westchester, California), Vanoy Harris (Freshman;  Arlington, Texas ), Micah Applegate (Junior; Denver, Colorado), Jonathan Gardner (Junior; Carrolton, Texas ), Josh Nollmeyer (Senior; Savage, Montana), Jordan Huisman (Senior; Orange City, Iowa), Patrick Visscher (Senior; Sioux Center, Iowa), Kyle Scholten (Junior; Inwood, Iowa), David Griess (Senior; Lynden, Washington), Daniel Fennig (Sophomore;  Duncanville , Texas) and Josh Van Kempen (Senior; Jenison, Michigan) all earned honorable mention honors.

Reinalda, Visscher, Huisman and Scholten all earned the honor while playing offensive line for the Defenders.  The four helped the Defenders gain 2,092 yards on the ground this season, nearly doubling the best rushing season for Dordt in the five year history of the program.  Dordt ranked 18th in the country in total yards rushing and 25th in rushing yardage per game.  

Trai Pickney ran for a school record 545 yards this season and scored five touchdowns while averaging 6.49 yards per carry.  Pickney also caught 15 passes for 255 yards and returned 19 kickoffs for a 21.1 yards per return average.

Seth Vande Voort, a 2011 2nd team selection earned the honor after leading the Defenders in tackles, getting in on 124 stops—63 of them solo with two quarterback sacks and eight tackles for loss.  Vande Voort is the Dordt career leader tackles with credit for 138 solo and 141 assisted stops in his three seasons.

Sam Ashmore claimed the honor after leading the Defenders in tackles for loss with 15.5 and he had 47 solo and 48 assisted stops.

Ray Cleveland led the Defenders in interceptions this season with four and made 54 solo tackles and assisted on 28 at safety.  Cleveland also forced five fumbles in his first season with Dordt.

Vanoy Harris accumulated 53 solo tackles and 35 assisted tackles in his freshman campaign.  The linebacker recovered a fumble and forced three others.

Micah Applegate recorded 8.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks while playing on the defensive line.

Jonathan Gardner led the team in sacks with four and he had two fumble recoveries including one that was returned for a touchdown.  Gardner was credited with 17 solo and 29 assisted tackles.

Josh Nollmeyer had two interceptions in his final season and was in on 35 solo tackles with 14 assisted stops.

David Griess caught a team high 20 passes for a 14.4 yards per catch average and had two touchdowns.  Griess caught 75 passes during his career for 1,032 yards.

Daniel Fennig ran for 368 yards on 60 carries and caught 10 balls for 83 yards.  Fennig has 908 yards rushing through two seasons and leads the program in rushing touchdowns with nine.

Josh Van Kempen closed his career with 317 yards rushing and had a 3.3 yards per carry average with a touchdown scored.  Van Kempen leaves the Defender football program as its leading rusher with 1,273 yards on 363 carries.  Van Kempen played in 37 games over the course of his four seasons.
