Blades Face Colorado Twice

The puck drops at…7:30 pm on Friday, November 16th and again at 4:15 pm on Saturday, November 17th as the Dordt Blades face off against the University of Colorado in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Who are they?…the Buffaloes are an ACHA Division 3 opponent and the teams met earlier this season in Boulder with Colorado narrowly beating Dordt by a 2-1 margin.
The Buffaloes enter the week with a record of 3-8 and have given up 56 goals while scoring 48 and Colorado is winless on the road at 0-3.
Zach Amstutz and Tyson Riddel are topping the scoring charts for Colorado with 12 points each. Amstutz has 6 goals and 6 assists on the year while Riddell has 5 goals to go along with a team leading 7 helpers. Tyler Patrick, Jesse Gasbarro and Max Prendergast all are in double digits in scoring with 11, 11 and 10 points respectively.
Frederick Newton is the main goaltender of record for the Buffs with 540 minutes played, posting a 2-7 record. Newton enters with a goals against average of 4.89 and a .870 save percentage. Mike Stafford has played two games in goal with a 1-1 record, a GAA of 4.00 and a save percentage of .840.
All statistics listed above do not include Colorado’s against the University of South Dakota on Thursday, November 15.
The Blades…are coming off a pair of losses at the hands of the Iowa Hawkeyes last weekend and the Blades are currently 2-9.
Brandon Fast leads all Dordt players with 12 points on a team high six goals to go along with 6 assists. Eric Huitsing has 10 points on 3 goals and a team high 7 assists. Nic Enerson has 4 goals and 2 assists for 6 points.
Riley Braun has recorded all 660 minutes in goal for the Blades and has a 4.91 goals against average and a .878 save percentage with one shut-out.
Dordt College has scored 25 goals this season while giving up 54.
Last time they met…Colorado has not won a game since beating the Blades on October 26, dropping 5 straight since that date. In that outing, the Blades were playing in their second game in as many days and rallied in the third period before falling to the Colorado 2-1.
The first period was winding to a close before Colorado finally broke the 0-0 deadlock with a Robert Ash marker with just 49 seconds left in the opening frame of action and Colorado took a 1-0 lead in to the first intermission.
Two and a half minutes into period number 2 the Buffaloes added to their lead with a goal by Max Pendergrast to make it 2-0 and neither team would find the back of the net again for 23 plus minutes.
Dylan Van Dyk put the visiting Blades on the board and cut the Colorado lead down to just one with a goal coming at the 13:55 mark of the third period on an assist from Nic Enerson.The goal brought renewed life to the Blades, who had played the night before, but they could not find the equalizer, losing 2-1.
The scoresheet showed Riley Braun turning in a solid performance in goal, turning away 59 of the 61 Colorado shots, while listing Dordt College with just 18 shots on goal.
The series…Dordt and Colorado have met 5 times since 2008 with the Buffaloes enjoying a narrow 3-2 advantage in the series with Colorado winning the last three.
Last time out…Colorado lost a pair of games last weekend, falling 9-4 to the Nebraska Cornhuskers and 6-2 to the University of Northern Colorado while the Blades dropped a pair to the Hawkeyes.
After This Weekend…the Blades will have a 3 week hiatus from competition as they will next take the ice on December 7 and 8 when they travel to Dubuque to take on MACHA opponent, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
New conference affiliation…the Dordt Blades have joined the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) which has schools in two separate divisions (Gold and Silver) and Dordt College will be a part of the Silver Division. Western Conference schools include:
include: Iowa, Iowa State, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Missouri State (D3), Kansas, Nebraska and Dordt.
The top two teams from the North, Central and West will make the playoffs, plus 2 wild card spots decided on winning percentage. Lewis, Western Illinois, Nebraska and Dordt are all probationary teams and therefore will not be eligible for playoffs in 2012-2013.
The Coaches…Bill Elgersma returns for his fourth season behind the bench for the Blades. Elgersma helped lead the Blades to their 3rd ACHA National Tournament appearance in 2009-2010. Before taking over the reins in 2009-2010, Elgersma served as the assistant coach. Assisting Elgersma again this season will be Adam Jeninga (6th year) and John Langeraap (4th year).
