Scholar-Athlete Honors For Men's Runners

(Monday, November 19; Sioux Center, Iowa)  Four Dordt College Defender men’s cross country runners have earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors for the recently completed 2012 season.

Heading the list is Ryan Tholen (Senior; Tracy, Minnesota) who earns the honor for the third time in his career.  Tholen was a track and cross country scholar-athlete last year and earns the honor again this season while also qualifying for the NAIA National Championship Meet.  Tholen ran 141st in the 309 runner field.

Chris Postma (Junior; Orange City, Iowa) claims the honor for the first time along with Tim Bierma (Junior; Sioux Center, Iowa).  Stephen Olson (Senior; Delavan, Wisconsin) earned the honor for the second time in cross country and was a pick in track last year as well.

Tholen is an engineering major while Postma is studying exercise science.  Olson majors in history and Bierma is studying biotech and agriculture.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that 203 men's cross country student-athletes have been named 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Concordia (Neb.), Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and St. Ambrose (Iowa) lead all institutions with six individuals on the list.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.
