Blades Resume Action Against Wisconsin-Platteville

December 5, 2012

The puck drops at…10:00 pm on Friday, December 7th  and again at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 8th  in the Mystique Community Ice Arena in Dubuque, Iowa as the Dordt Blades resume play after a three week break.  The Blades will be taking on MACHA opponent, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, an ACHA D2 member.   The Saturday game is the Pioneer’s Second Annual Pink Out Night and will serve as a Breast Cancer Benefit Game.

“Who are they?”…the Pioneers are a conference opponent for the Blades as both teams compete in the Silver Division-Western Conference and Wisconsin-Platteville currently sits at the top of the Silver Division with 14 points.
The Pioneers enter the week with a record of 9-5-2 and are 6-2-1 at home and 3-3-1 on the road while scoring 63 goals and giving up 36.

Riley Zehner has 20 points on the year to lead the Pioneers with a team high 12 goals and a tie for team high honors with 8 assists.  Tom Kelly and Tony Schultz both have 11 points and Goyko Rajak has 10.

Riley Braun (Altona, Manitoba) has spent all 780 minutes between the pipes for the Dordt College Blades and sports a 4.46 goals against average and a .890 save percentage with one shut-out.

Last time they met…was on November 28, 2008 and the Blades routed the Pioneers 9-1 in a game played in Sioux Center as part of The Clash in the Corn tournament.

Last time out…for the Blades, the third time definitely proved to be the charm as they knocked off the visiting Colorado Buffaloes on November 17 by a score of 4-2. The Blades narrowly lost two previous games against Colorado this season, both by 2-1 margins.

Nic Enerson banged home his 5th goal of the season 2 minutes in to the contest to give the Blades a 1-0 lead, the first lead they enjoyed over the Buffaloes this season. Enerson's goal at 17:54 came when he finished a rebound after an initial shot from Eric Walter who was credited with his 6th assist of the year. Kevin Grootenboer picked up his 2nd goal of the year and gave the Blades a 2-0 lead at 15:21 when he stole a pass and fired a goal in to the top right hand corner.
Buffaloes Max Predergast cut the Dordt advantage down to one, finishing a 2 on 1 break with an assist from Robert Ash at 13:48.

Dordt regained their two goal cushion when Brandon Fast fired the eventual game winner in to an empty net. The Blades' Jeremy van Woerden received the assist on the goal as he was dumping the puck into the Buffalo end when it took a strange bounce off the Zamboni gate; Buffalo netminder Fred Newton had left his goal to play the puck but instead it ended up right on the stick of Brandon Fast who buried his 7th goal of the year at 7:30.

Eric Walter gave Dordt a 4-1 lead with an unassisted goal blasted in to the top right corner at 2:09 and the Blades went in to the first intermission with a 4-1 advantage. The Blades were outshot 20-6 in the second period but Dordt netminder  Riley Braun turned away every Buffalo attempt and the score stood at 4-1 after two periods.

A power play goal at 17:20 by Buffalo's Tyson Riddell that found the left side of the net, made it a 4-2 game. With under two minutes to play in the game, Colorado pulled their goalie for the extra attacker but the Buffaloes could get no closer as Braun continued to stand tall all night long for the Blades. Braun finished the night with an impressive 42 saves while his counterpart Fred Newton had just 18 saves.

The Blades were 0-5 on the power play and 6-7 on the penalty kill.

Wisconsin-Platteville dropped a pair of games to Illinois State on November 16 and 17 by scores of 3-2 and 7-2.

After This Weekend…the Blades will have 40 days off before returning to the ice on January 18 and 19 when they take on the Cyclones of Iowa State.  The start time on Friday, January 18 will be 7:00 pm and the puck will drop at 10:45 pm on Saturday, January 19 with both games being played in Ames, Iowa.

New conference affiliation…the Dordt Blades have joined the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) which has schools in two separate ivisions (Gold and Silver) and Dordt College will be a part of the Silver Division.  Western Conference schools include:Iowa, Iowa State, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Missouri State (D3), Kansas, Nebraska and Dordt.  Kansas has “closed the doors” on the 2012-2013 season and will not compete in any more contests this year.
