GPAC Championship Game Tuesday

February 25, 2013

GAMETIME… Dordt College will host Morningside in Great Plains Athletic Conference Final action on Tuesday, February 26 at 7:00.  The game will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and there will be a video webstream available at www.dordt.edu.athletics.  Results and updates will be available at https://twitter.com/dcathletics  and at www.dordt.edu/athletics when complete.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Morningside Mustangs are 18-14 this season and finished the year 11-9 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Morningside has won seven games in a row, starting the run of victories after three straight losses which included road losses to Dordt and Midland.  The wins to close the regular season were over Dakota Wesleyan (90-86), Nebraska Wesleyan (72-61), Briar Cliff (76-66), Mount Marty (87-77) and Hastings (93-85).  Those five wins lifted Morningside into a three way tie for fourth place in the GPAC and the no. 5 seed in the post-season tournament.

Morningside is scoring 76.9 points per game and allow 74.8 points per contest.  The Mustangs convert 44.5 percent of their field goals while teams are making 47.7 percent of the field goals they take.  Opponents hold a 36.3-32.8 rebounding advantage but the Mustangs make up for that deficiency by forcing 16.3 turnovers and giving it up 11.3 time per outing.

Danny Rudeen scores 19.8 points per game and he converts 50.8 percent of his field goals.  Rudeen also gets to 5.1 rebounds per game and has 70 assists.  Tanner Miller adds 11.4 points per game has 90 assists.  Rudeen and Miller have 71 and 47 made three-pointers respectively.  Trent Miller scores 8.3 points per game and Jared Kolbush knocks down 5.7 points per game.  Tanner Ferguson and Kyle Nikkel are scoring 8.5 points per game respectively and Nikkel has 4.9 rebounds per outing.  Trent Miller tops the team with 190 assists.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender men are 25-6 overall and finished the GPAC season with a 15-5 record and the no. 2 seed in the GPAC Tournament.  The Defenders have won six games in a row since and overtime loss to Northwestern on January 30.  The Defenders have won nine of their last ten games and are 16-3 since December 12. Dordt has won six games in a row on three different occasions this season.

Dordt has outscored teams 80.9-69.3 this season and hold a 39.0-30.4 rebounding advantage.  Dordt converts 50.6 percent of its field goals and allow opponents to make 43 percent of their field goal attempts.  The Defenders have turned the ball over 13.3 times per game this season and have converted 38.6 percent of their three-point shots.

Cliff Warner and Trevor Wolterstorff score 14.6 and 14.5 points per game with Warner converting 46.1 percent of his three-point shots and Wolterstorff has made 57.6 percent of his field goals.  Wolterstorff tops the team with a 6.7 rebounding average while Warner has 113 assists and 39 steals.  Jordan Vogel knocks down 13.3 points per game with 5.1 rebounds and he makes 64.4 percent of his field goal attempts.  Chris Sievers has lifted his scoring average to 10.5 points per game and he makes 55.1 percent of his field goals with Austin Katje tossing in 9.9 points per game.  Kyle Lindbergh has a 7.3 points per game average and takes in 6.2 rebounds while Shawn Keizer is at 4.5 points per game.

NAIA TOURNAMENT…The 32-team field for the NAIA Division II National Basketball Tournament will be announced on Wednesday, February 27.  The winner of this game advances with the second automatic bid out of the Great Plains Athletic Conference—Northwestern earned the first with the regular season title.  There are 11 at-large berths available as well and will be issued based on the final NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll released on Wednesday.

LAST TIME… Morningside controlled their game with Northwestern most of the way, withstanding a couple Northwestern charges in the second half including two potential game winner attempts in the closing seconds.  Danny Rudeen scored 18 and had five assists in 36 minutes of action while Trent Miller added 16 points with five assists.  Drew Dau scored 10 before fouling out and Kyle Nikkel had nine points and six rebounds. Morningside was outrebounded 42-29 but forced 18 turnovers and had just nine of their own. Morningside converted 28-66 field goals while Northwestern was limited to 22-52 shooting.

Dordt handled Midland by a 69-68 margin as a shot by James Parrott was blocked by Trevor Wolterstorff in the closing moments to secure the win.  Dordt led by as many as 14 and withstood Midland’s challenge in the second half, never relinquishing the lead.  Trevor Wolterstorff and Jordan Vogel each had 17 points with Wolterstorff getting nine rebounds and Chris Sievers had 15 points and Kyle Lindbergh added 12 points and ten rebounds with four assists.  Both teams had 31 rebounds and Midland converted 27-62 shots while Dordt was 29-47 from the field.  Dordt had 16 turnovers and Midland nine.

SERIES… Dordt trails the series 16-13 and have won both meetings this season.  Dordt won the December 12 meeting in Sioux City 70-63 after leading 34-27 at halftime.  Cliff Warner had 21 points and two assists in the win while Trevor Wolterstorff had 12 points and nine rebounds.  Chris Sievers came off the bench to score 11 and had nine rebounds.  Morningside was led by Tanner Ferguson with 11 points and Tanner Miller added 10 points.  Morningside was 25-70 from the field while Dordt was 25-53 from the floor.  Dordt had a 53-30 rebounding advantage but committed 25 turnovers to 10 for the hosts.

The two teams played again on January 23 with Dordt winning 89-68, outscoring the visitors by a 50-35 margin in the second half. Austin Katje scored 20 and had six rebounds while Warner had 14 points and Wolterstorff 11.  Danny Rudeen led the Mustangs with 19 and Kyle Nikkel added 16.  Dordt was 32-55 from the field and had a 37-32 rebounding advantage.  Morningside was 23-60 from the field and converted 17-21 free throws.

HISTORY…This the third straight appearance in the GPAC post-season tournament championship game for the Defenders.  Two years ago the Defenders were the no. 5 seed in the field, beating Briar Cliff and Northwestern on the road before losing a 91-77 decision to Sioux Falls on the road.  Kyle Lindbergh had 20 points in that los while Cliff Warner had 14 and Trevor Wolterstorff and Jordan Vogel each had ten.

Last year the Defenders lost the title game to Northwestern at the De Witt Gym, getting down 45-24 at halftime before falling 86-61.  Dordt was led by Trevor Wolterstorff with 16 and Jordan Vogel and Chris Sievers had 11 and ten respectively.

This will be the second time Dordt and Morningside have met in the GPAC finals with the previous game happening in 2006 when Dordt held a 30-17 advantage.  Morningside mounted a comeback and won that game 71-62.  Luke Ruter and Mark Rowenhorst each had 12 in the loss.  Dordt advanced to the National Tournament with an at-large berth that season.
