Baseball Opens Season In Arizona

GAMETIME… The Dordt College baseball team plays seven games over Spring Break in Arizona.  The Defenders faced Jamestown in a doubleheader on March 11 and will take on Wayland Baptist on Tuesday, March 12 in a doubleheader.  The Defenders are scheduled to face Dickinson State on March 13 and 14 in a pair of single games.

SCOUTING REPORT… Wayland Baptist is 4-15 this season and have a team earned run average of 7.21 and a team batting average of .388.

Tom Bailey is 1-2 this season with a 1.93 earned run average.  He has thrown 23 innings and has struck out 23 with 13 walks.  Craig Cook has thrown 23 innings and Ryan Downs in 1-3 in 20 innings pitched with 15 strikeouts and four bases on balls.  Chris Buitron is batting .500 through nine games played while Mark Davis has a team high 23 hits in 19 games and is batting .333.  Gregg Veneklasen is batting .317 and has a team high two homeruns, sharing the honor with Josh Chinni.

Dickinson State is 6-6 this season and has been outscored 67-46 and has a team batting average of .237 and team earned run average of 4.92. 

The Blue Hawks are led by Ryan Risse with a .414 batting average and nine runs batted in and 12 hits.  Joe Binstock is batting .350 with five runs scored.  Jon Mendoza has eight runs scored and nine hits with five runs batted in and four bases on balls.  Eric Seiler and Matt Burwell are both 2-0 with Seiler boasting a 2.51 earned run average and Burwell has a 5.03 earned run average.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt opens play this season after posting a 13-31 record last season.  The Defenders had a .271 batting average with a 7.81 earned run average. 

Nick Serrato returns after batting .343 last season with 35 hits, three doubles and 15 runs scored.  Dustin Brisel had a .322 batting average with 38 hits and ten doubles and knocked in 20 runs.  Nate Fraley was good for a .313 batting average and had 45 hits with seven doubles, three triples and 18 runs batted in and 33 hits.  Lucas Carls posted a 5-4 record last season with a 3.58 earned run average and he struck out 54 batters in 55 1/3 innings.  Jake Slings pitched 36 innings and had a 5.25 earned run average.  Ben Van Kekerix also pitched 40 innigns and had 22 strikeouts against ten bases on balls.

NEXT UP… Dordt is scheduled to face Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, March 15 before returning home.  The Defenders are scheduled to face Morningside in Sioux Center on March 28 to open GPAC play.
