Baseball Faces Southwest Minnesota Friday

GAMETIME… Dordt College concludes its baseball trip to Arizona with a game against Southwest Minnesota State, an NCAA Division II member from Marshall, Minnesota on Friday, March 15. 

SCOUTING REPORT… Southwest Minnesota State is 4-8 this season and is 1-5 on their trip to Tucson, earning a win over Bemidji State on March 13 to snap a seven game losing skid.  Jordan Kontz is batting .350 this season with 14 hits and three runs batted in to go with seven runs scored.  Jarred Carlson is batting .344 with 11 hits and a team high 14 runs batted in.  Brian Ness bats .342 and Kyle Young .341.  Ness has the lone homerun of the season for the Mustangs so far.  Southwest Minnesota State is batting .283 this season while opponents are batting .314.

The Mustangs have a 5.91 earned run average with Steven Wehr boasting a 2.31 earned run average through 11 innings with six strikeouts and 12 walks issued.  Brandan Alfson has appeared in five games and has a 1.29 earned run average in seven innings pitched.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defenders are 2-4 on their trip to Arizona.  Dordt is batting .252 this season with Nate Fraley leading the way with a .471 batting average and five runs with a team high eight hits and three stolen bases.  Jason Wapnick is batting .444 with three doubles.  Nick Serrato is batting .375 with six hits and Andy Kollbuam has knocked in three in five games played.

The Defenders pitching wins have come from Josh Van Kekerix and Ben Van Kekerix.  Josh got his win in relief.  Mark Nyhoff has the longest pitching outing on this trip with a six inning performance in a 3-1 loss to Wayland Baptist.

NEXT UP… Dordt will face Midland in Fremont, Nebraska on Tuesday, March 19 in a non-conference doubleheader.  The Defenders will host Morningside on Thursday, March 28 in the opening of GPAC play.
