Lacrosse Faces Key Weekend Contests

Divisional Contests Slated for Sowers...
The Dordt College lacrosse team will travel to Kansas City, MO this weekend for a pair of pivotal northwest division contests between Missouri S&T and Creighton University.

All of Saturday’s games will be played at Faith Christian Academy in Kansas City, Missouri.

The schedule for the day is as follows--
Dordt College vs. Missouri S&T @ 10:30am
Missouri S&T vs. Creighton @ 1:00pm
Dordt College vs. Creighton @ 3:30pm

Last Time out…
Dordt College put everything together in a 22-0 thumping over Cornell Saturday, March 30 in Mount Vernon, IA. Nate Weigel led all scorers with five goals. Mark Opp and Drew Johnson poured in 3 goals each. Seth Borchard tallied two goals and an assist and Tyler York notched two goals. Jordan Harmelink and Jordan Shaffer scored their first goals of the season. Jordan Yntema made one save. T.J. Wells made three saves.

The second game of the doubleheader pitted Dordt College against the Judson Eagles. The Eagles came out firing and the Sowers played tough for a quarter but couldn’t counteract a potent Judson attack in a 26-4 loss. Nathan Smith scored two goals for the Sowers. Mark Opp and Nate Weigel each accounted for the other two goals. Yntema made 12 saves and allowed 14 goals for a .462 save percentage.

This week…
Dordt will take on the Missouri S&T Miners at 10:30am.

Since Missouri S&T joined the northwest division from the southern division in 2011, the Miners boast a 2-0 record against Dordt College. In 2011, the Miners defeated Dordt 18-12 followed by an 11-3 win last season.

The Miners have only played two games this season and hold a 0-2 record having lost to Arkansas and St Olaf. They have been outscored by a combined 25-4 in its two contests.

Drew Pereira has two goals for the Miners. Michael Pickler and Ken Roethemeyer each have one goal. Keeper Jerrod Jansen has allowed 25 goals to 26 saves for a .510 save percentage.

The Sowers will take on Creighton at 3:30 immediately following Creighton’s matchup with Missouri S&T.

The series between Dordt College and Creighton is tied at 4-4 with Dordt taking the first four contests and Creighton winning the last four meetings.

Creighton returns three players that were named to the 2012 GRLC All-Conference team in Evan Cordrey (first-team midfield), Ryan Gardner (third-team midfield) and Michael Watson (third-team attack).

The Bluejays are 2-0 on the year with wins coming over Kansas State and Colorado Mines. Creighton outscored its opponents by a combined 31-8.

Watson and Gardner lead the Bluejays with eight goals each. Erik Yates and Cordrey have tallied five goals. Gardner leads the team with eight assists. James Wagner is in his first year as the keeper for the Bluejays. He has made 12 saves and has allowed eight goals through two games for a .600 save percentage.

Next Up…

The Sowers will travel to Omaha, NE on April 13 for one contest against Regis, a team out of Denver, CO. Game time is set for 1:00pm.

Season notes…
Senior Mark Opp is currently ranked 7th among all field players in the GRLC with 21 points (13 goals, 8 assists).

Sophomore Nate Weigel is ranked 11th in the field with 14 points (11 goals, 3 assists) and
Senior goalie Jordan Yntema is ranked 3rd in the GRLC with a .591 save percentage and 2nd in saves with 68.
