Defender Softball Has Two Named Scholar-Athletes

(Thursday, May 30; Sioux Center, Iowa)  – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced 286 softball student-athletes have been named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Two Dordt College Defender softball players were on that list.

Brittany Kooiker (Senior; Tinley Park, Illinois) and Shantelle Gritters (Junior; Hull, Iowa) both earned the honor for the second time in their careers. 

Kooiker, a recent graduate with a Nursing degree, also earned the honor for the 2012 softball season.   Gritters earned the honor earlier this school year while playing women’s soccer.  Gritters is studying Education at Dordt College.

Kooiker played in 38 games and had three homeruns and 15 runs batted in while Gritters played in all 39 games for the Defenders and had three doubles and two triples.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.
