(Wednesday, July 24; Sioux Center, Iowa)  Jordyn Visscher, a freshman to be at Dordt College, has qualified for the Canada Games to be run in August -19.

Visscher qualified in the 2,000 meter steeple chase where she ran a time of 7:05 which won the Canada Games Trials and earned her  a spot on Team Ontario.  Visscher is one of 24 female athletes to qualify for Team Ontario Athletics and may also run in a middle distance event if necessary at the games in Sherbrooke, Quebec.  The steeplechase is scheduled to be run Tuesday, August 13 at 7:10 pm (Central Time).

“Jordyn has had an outstanding high school running career.  Her club coaches have done a great job of helping her progress as a runner on all levels over the past four years.  Being selected to run at the Canada Games is quite an honor and will only help Jordyn as she makes the transition to competing in college.  We’re looking forward to having her on the team next year because I know she will be a great teammate,” said Dordt College coach Greg Van Dyke.

Visscher will face competition that includes athletes that  are currently at NCAA schools and Canadian Universities.  The event will be broadcast on TSN.

The Canada Games is a high-level multi-sport event which is held every two years alternating between the Canada Winter Games and the Canada Summer Games.  Athletes are amateurs, under 23 years old and represent their province or territory.

Visscher committed to Dordt College in April and has personal bests of 18:17 on a 5,000 meter cross country course; 15:00 on a 4,000 meter course and 10:47 in a 3,000 meter race. Her times in track are equally impressive with a 10:26 in the 3,000; 4:55 in the 1,500; 2:24 in the 800 and 5:07 in the 1,500 meter steeplechase.

Visscher’s list of accomplishments includes her qualifying for the Ontario Provincial Track and Field Championships three times and the Cross Country Championships four times and placed 11th this past season.  She is also part of Speed River Track and Field Club and she participated in the Canadian Cross Country Championship in 2010 and 2012 and placed fourth in the 2,000 meter steeplechase in 2012.  Visscher was also a finalist for the Ontario Provincial Middle Distance Female Athlete of the year in 2012.  She’s been the female athlete of the year three times at Woodland Christian.
