NISO auditions to be held September 7

August 12, 2013

Auditions for membership in the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra will be held on Saturday, September 7, in the Music Building on the campus of Dordt College. Anyone wishing to play in the orchestra for the first time must audition, and all student members need to re-audition each year.

The Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra comprises some of the finest musicians in northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota. The orchestra’s more than 80 members include adults of all ages as well as gifted students ranging in age from high school through college. Each year several students who audition receive scholarships from the Friends of the Symphony for the purpose of continuing their private music instruction.

NISO presents three concerts per season in addition to the annual Concert for Children, which will be held on November 12 for area middle school students. Now entering its 28th season, this year’s concert series is titled Year of the Composer with conductor Christopher Stanichar leading the orchestra.

Highlights of this season include music at the Fall Concert on November 12 from operatic composers Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner, featuring soprano Shannon Salyards and tenor Russell Svenningsen. The Winter Pops Concert on February 1 will showcase some of the greatest hits ever written for piano when pianist Rich Ridenour shares his “I Love a Piano” program. For the Spring Concert on April 15, NISO will present works by “The Three B’s”—Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms—in a concert that highlights four of NISO’s principal musicians as soloists. An added bonus, the orchestra will play host to a guest concert by the Euclid Quartet when they return to Sioux Center on March 1.
