Cross Country In Lincoln Saturday

Meet Time… The Dordt cross country teams will run at the Woody Greeno Invite on Saturday, September 21.  The women’s race gets started at 10:00 with the men to follow at about 10:45.  Nebraska Wesleyan and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln co-host the event held at Pioneer Park; 3201 South Coddington, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Participants…A current list of entrants is not available but last year’s meet featured 32 female teams with 289 runners and the men’s field had 24 teams and 306 total runners in both the college and university division.

Last Year… The Dordt College women finished ninth at the Woody Greeno Invite in Lincoln, Nebraska with 282 team points. The Defenders were the top NAIA finishing team at the 32 team event.

Dordt's first runner across was Merissa Harkema with a time of 23:23 for 38th place. Katie Bonnema clocked a 23:28 for 40th and Lauren Opp was 47th with a time of 23:34. Abby De Vries ran a 24:01 for 76th place and Renee Buikema was Dordt's final counter with a 24:06 and 81st place. Kayla Byl and Kaylie Ogle were the pushers with times of 24:19 and 25:51 respectively.

Air Force won the team title with a 47 and Laura Galvan of Kansas State had a 21:10 for first place.

289 runners competed on the 6,000 meter course.

The Dordt College Defender men's cross country team finished ninth in the 23 team college division.

Dordt totaled 309 points for ninth while Colorado School of Mines had 25 points to win the division.

Dordt was led by Ryan Tholen with a 27:14 for 43rd place and Tim Bierma ran a 27:35 for 59th. Nathan Jackson and Trent Kischer ran 27:36 and 27:57 respectively for 61st and 72nd and Chris Postma was right behind with a 27:59 for 74th. Derek Opp and Jake Byma were the sixth and seventh for Dordt with times of 28:11 and 28:28.

306 runners competed on the 8,000 meter course.

Last Time… In what has become the traditional start to the cross country season for the Dordt Defenders, the Dordt women placed third at the Augustana Twi-Light Invite run at Yankton Trails in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Friday, September 4.

The Defenders totaled 82 points in the 19 team field as Augustana won the meet with a low score of 34.

Lauren Opp was first across the line for Dordt with a third place finish of 16:54 and Jordyn Visscher claimed 15th in 17:25. Kayla Byl and Renee Buikema weren't far behind with times of 17:37 and 17:43 which placed them 21st and 24th overall. Lillie Koerner, Abby De Vries and Justine Van Zee were separated by just six seconds each as Koerner was 27th in 17:47, DeVries was 34th in 17:25 and Van Zee was 36th in 17:53.

Augustana's Runa Falch won the three mile race in a time of 16:16.

The Dordt College men's cross country team finished fifth out of 19 teams at the same event.

Dordt totaled 180 points on a night where the team title went to Nebraska with a low of 31.

Nick Vander Kooi led the Dordt effort with a 19:24 for 17th place. Seniors Chris Postma and Tim Bierma ran the four mile course in 20:14 and 20:19 for 41st and 47th overall. Nathan Jackson was right behind in 20:21 and placed 50th overall. Steve Kelly was the fifth runner for Dordt in 20:42 for 62nd place and Jeremy Van Woerden and Sam Wensink paced out times of 20:52 and 20:53 for 74th and 77th.

231 runners competed with Nebraska's Trevor Vidlak winning the race in 18:18.

Poll…The Defender women are no. 7 in the most recent NAIA poll, up one spot from their ranking in the coaches’ pre-season voting.  The Defender men are in the “Others Receiving Votes” category of the top-25 rankings for the second straight week.

Next…The Defenders will run in the Roy Griak Invite on Saturday, September 28 in St. Paul, Minnesota.
