Defenders Host Lancers Tuesday In GPAC Volleyball

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will host Mount Marty this Tuesday, October 1 in Great Plains Athletic Conference action.  The junior varsity match starts at 6:00 with the varsity contest beginning at about  7:30. The match can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and there will be live video available at www.dordt.edu/athletics.   Results will be posted to www.dordt.edu/athletics and https://twitter.com/dcathletics and also at https://www.facebook.com/dordtdefenders .

THE OPPONENT… Mount Marty is 9-10 overall and 0-4 in the GPAC.  Mount Marty has lost matches to Doane, Briar Cliff, Concordia and Northwestern in league play.  The Lancers have lost three out of their last four matches with the win in that string being a 3-1 win on the road over York (Nebraska).

The Lancers are averaging 11.21 kills per set with 14.03 digs and 1.43 blocks.  The Yankton, South Dakota based programs hits for a .155 kill efficiency and they get 1.46 points per set off of service aces.

Mount Marty is led by Bailey Kuchta with a 2.38 kills per set average while Kristen Boyle is averaging 2.0 kills per set in 45 sets played.  Five other Mount Marty players are averaging between one and two kills per set.  Caitlyn Illg is good for 8.44 assists per contest and she also has a team high 15 service aces.  Courtney Miller tops the team with 3.2 digs per set.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 12-4 overall and 4-2 in GPAC play.  It was an up and down week for the Defenders last week, losing a hard fought GPAC match to arch-rival Northwestern 3-2 on Tuesday and they dropped a 3-0 match to Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday night.  Saturday Dordt rebounded to win a decision over Midland in Fremont, Nebraska by a 3-1 count.    The Defenders had won eight matches in a row before losing to Northwestern.  The Defenders are 5-1 in matches that go three sets;  6-0 in matches that are decided in four and 1-3 in matches that go the distance.

Dordt is averaging 13.5 kills per contest with a robust .291 kill efficiency.  The Defenders get 2.09 points per set off of blocks and they get to 15.76 digs per contest.  The Defenders average 1.44 ace serves per outing and they serve receive for a 94.6 percent success rate.

Kayla Gesink is putting up 10.45 assists per set with 1.1 kills and she has an average of 2.47 digs per outing.  Lindsey Floen is hitting for a .432 kill efficiency with 3.0 kills and she puts down 1.05 blocks per set.  Brooke Wolterstorff has the most kills for the Defenders with a 3.21 average and she has a .279 kill efficiency to go with 2.68 digs per set.  Jenna Horstman is at 2.65 kills per set with a .273 kill efficiency while Meghan Krausman and Elizabeth Kiel average 1.94 and 1.43 kills per set respectively.  Kayla Broekhuis leads the team with a 4.76 dig average and she has 16 service aces.  Jocelyn Bousema has 17 aces along with Wolterstorff and Celaine Haan has a team high 18 service aces this season.

LAST ACTION… Mount Marty lost to Doane 26-24, 19-25, 16-25, 25-11, 15-10 on Saturday at Crete, Nebraska.  The Lancers got 11 kills from Sierra Kloth in the loss while Kuchta and Boyle each had 11.  Illg put up 33 assists and Sam Bischoff recorded three service aces.  Miller and Kristie Tessmer had 15 and 14 digs respectively. 

Dordt beat Midland 25-14, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21 on Saturday while compiling a .343 kill efficiency.  The Defenders limited Midland to a .184 kill efficiency and forced them into 26 attack errors.  Dordt’s attack was led by Wolterstorff with 14 kills and Floen added 11.  Horstman knocked down five and Gesink had 36 assists.  Broekhuis had 16 digs and Bousema 11 and Bousema had two service aces along with Wolterstorff.

HISTORY… Dordt has won 25 straight matches in this series dating back to 1998.  Dordt won last year’s meetings by 3-0 counts.  The win in Sioux Center came on September 19 with Dordt winning 27-25, 25-15, 25-13 behind 11 kills by Katelyn Schuller and nine by Loy Sahr.  Gesink had 31 assists and Bousema had seven digs.  Amanda Dirksen topped Mount Marty with seven digs and Illg had 23 assists.  Miller got to eight digs for the Lancers.

The teams played in Yankton on October 16 with Dordt winning 25-22, 25-23, 25-22.  Floen had ten kills and Gesink 31 assists for Dordt and Broekhuis got to nine digs.  Dirksen had 12 kills and Boyle 11 for the Lancers and Illg put up 23 assists.

RANKINGS… Dordt is no. 19 in the most recent NAIA poll with Midland no. 5, Northwestern no. 7 and Hastings no. 23 to complete the list of GPAC schools in the coaches’ voting.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE… Dordt will travel to Buena Vista in Storm Lake, Iowa on Thursday, October 3 for a 5:00 varsity match only.  The Defenders are scheduled to host Doane and Dakota Wesleyan on October 5 and October 9 in their next two matches.

Mount Marty will travel to Dakota State on Thursday, October 3.

GPAC SCHEDULE AND SCORES… As it stands right now the Defenders are one game out of second place in the conference in the loss column while Northwestern is unbeaten in first place.  Midland and Northwestern will play in a key GPAC contest this weekend.
