Football Returns Home To Face Concordia

THE FOE… Concordia enters play with a 2-0 GPAC record and a 4-0 overall mark.  The Bulldogs have GPAC wins over Hastings and Midland this season and they dropped William Jewell and Dakota State in non-conference action already this year.

The Bulldogs have outgained teams 873-504 on the ground through four games and are averaging over 218 yards of rushing offense.  The Bulldogs have also shown they are capable of passing with an average of 170 yards per game passing.  Opponents are gaining 103 yards on the ground and 145 yards in the air on average.

Von Thomas is 66-108 passing for 683 yards and three touchdowns and two interceptions thrown.  Thomas has also rushed 51 times and has 202 yards rushing for a 4.0 yards per carry average.  Bryce Collins is the leading ground gainer with 297 yards on 67 carries and Trey Barnes has 280 yards rushing on 64 carries.  Jeff Balz and Derek Klauseach have 11 catches for 116 and 117 yards respectively.  Balz has one touchdown catch and Chavarius Curry-Felix has nine grabs for 97 yards and Jerad Leifeld has two touchdown grabs out of seven catches.

The Bulldog defense has picked off eight passes and Tait Sibbel leads the team with two.  Darnell Woods has been in on 31 tackles and has one interception.  Langston Jones has 29 tackles and Nakemm Evans has 23 tackles with 1.5 sacks.  Dylan Heithoff has a team high three quarterback sacks and has been in on 16 tackles.

Joe Marshall has punted 20 times for a 36.8 average and Adam Meirose is 2-4 on field goals with a long of 28 yards. 

Meirose is 13-14 on point after attempts.  Derek Blessing handles the return chores along with playing defensive back.  Blessing is averaging 13.0 yards per punt return.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt College is 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the GPAC with losses to Midland, Morningside and Briar Cliff.  The Defenders beat Dakota State to start the season.

The Defenders are outgaining teams on the ground 235-202 per game but are allowing 233 yards per game in the air while throwing for 77 yards per game.  Dordt has turned the ball over 13 times while forcing six turnovers.

Lenard Manuel has run for 207 yards on 40 carries for a 5.2 yards per carry average.  Erin Francis has run for 162 yards and Daniel Fennig has 145 yards.  Fennig has the highest per carry average at 9.1 yards per run.  Thomas Newman is 11-27 passing for 152 yards and two touchdowns and has run for 109 yards on 62 carries.  Sam Verhulst has caught ten passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns and Darryl Van Grouw has five catches for 73 yards.  Trai Pickney has been limited in the last two weeks due to injury and has three punt returns for a 6.3 yards per punt average.  Pickney and Fennig handle the majority of the kick returns with Pickney running back nine for a 17.1 average and Fennig five for 18.8 yards per return.

Seth Vande Voort has 43 tackles with three for loss and Jake Atkinson has 32 tackles with 2.5 for loss.  Cole McClain has 29 stops and Sean Quinlan has 26.  Atkinson and Pitre have Dordt’s two interceptions and Micah Applegate tops the team with 5.0 tackles for loss.

Barry Dykstra is 7-8 on point after attempts and Heath Bonestroo has punted 21 times and has a 41.0 yards per punt average.

PREVIOUSLY…Concordia played Dakota State in Madison, South Dakota on Saturday, September 28 and won a 24-0 decision.  The Bulldogs outgained the Trojans 310-214 with 181 yards on the ground and 129 passing yards.  Dakota State ran for 159 yards on 51 attempts.  Concordia led 7-0 at halftime and scored ten in the third quarter and tacked on a touchdown in the fourth quarter.  Barnes ran for 74 yards and a touchdown and Thomas had 63 yards on 12 carries and was 14-27 passing for 129 yards.  Klaus caught three passes for 50 yards.  Langston Jones led the defense with ten tackles and Darnell Woods had seven solo stops and ten total tackles.  Heithoff had 3.5 tackles for loss and had a forced fumble.

Dordt lost to Briar Cliff 54-14 after trailing 20-14 at halftime.  The Defenders ran for 300 yards but were susceptible to the big play.  Manuel had 83 yards on the ground on 12 carries and Francis had 61 yards on four carries.  Verhulst had six catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.  Vande Voort made 11 stops and Quinlan had eight along with Atkinson.  Applegate had two tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.

HISTORY… Dordt is 1-4 against Concordia since the series began in 2008 with Dordt’s first varsity football season.  Concordia erupted for 31 points in the second quarter to take a 38-0 lead and went on to win 52-12.  Concordia outgained Dordt 361-245 as Dordt ran for 178 yards.  Pickney and Manuel ran for 55 and 41 yards respectively.  Von Thomas was 14-23 in the air with 164 yards and completed three for touchdown.  Colten Quinabo caught five passes for 43 yards and Noah Smith had four receptions for 58 yards and two touchdowns.  Ray Cleveland forced two fumbles in the loss but Dordt was done in partly by four interceptions.
