Volleyball Hosts Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will host Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, October 9 with the junior varsity match starting at 6:00 and the varsity match at 7:30. The match can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and there will be a live video webstream available at www.dordt.edu/athletics . SISTER TO SISTER BREAST CANCER AWARENESS EVENT…The Dordt College volleyball program and Promise Community Health Center have joined forces to create awareness of breast cancer and its impact on northwest Iowa at the Dordt-Dakota Wesleyan volleyball match.
Planning for the event began in Spring 2013 as the coaching staff and the Dordt volleyball team became aware of the impact breast cancer has in northwest Iowa. In 2011 the national incidence of breast cancer was 118.7 cases per 100,000 women and in Iowa the incidence was 120.1 Lyon County has a rate of 147.7, Plymouth County a rate of 145.7 and Sioux County 122.
Promise Community Health Center is in its second year of funding from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Siouxland Affiliate for the project Sister to Sister. Sister to Sister has increased access to breast cancer screening, by providing affordable breast exams and mammograms to women in the community.
The Defender volleyball program encourages you to pray for and remember those who have battled and are battling cancer and for those families affected by the loss of loved ones due to cancer.
THE OPPONENT… Dakota Wesleyan is 0-7 in the GPAC and 6-17 overall. The Tigers have won two of its last three matches with victories over Presentation and Valley City State. A two match winning streak ended with a loss to Mayville State on Saturday. The Mitchell, South Dakota based school has a pair of wins this season over both Presentation and Valley City and they have also beaten William Penn and York.
The Tigers average 10.49 kills per set and get to 15.05 digs per outing. Dakota Wesleyan also averages 1.35 blocks and 1.08 ace serves per outing.
Sarah Kruse puts down 2.44 kills per set and Mallory Jark is putting down 2.36 per contest with a .287 kill efficiency. Taylor Spence averages 1.94 kills and 2.64 digs and Hannah Hammer is putting down 1.39 kills and Elizabeth Humiston is averaging 1.24 per outing. Briana Jung and Rebecca Garcia have handled most of the setting chores with Jung averaging 5.87 assists and Garcia 3.30. Jung leads the team with 18 ace serves, sharing team honors with Mackenzie Stevens. Maggie Stehly leads the team with 3.64 digs per outing and Taylor Spence gets to 2.64.
THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 15-4 this season and 6-2 in the league with eight matches remaining in the regular season. Dordt has won four matches in a row since suffering back to back losses to Northwestern and Nebraska Wesleyan in late September.
Three of Dordt’s four losses have come in matches that have gone to five sets. Dordt is 7-1 in matches that have been swept and they are 7-0 when matches are decided by a 3-1 margin.
The Defenders average 13.39 kills with a .298 kill efficiency and they get another 2.13 points per set on blocks and 1.49 on service aces. The Dordt dig average is 16.06. Brooke Wolterstorff is averaging 3.15 kills with a .288 kill efficiency and she gets to 2.63 digs. Lindsey Floen’s kill average is 2.81 and she leads the team with a .414 kill efficiency and her block average of 1.04 is also tops on the squad. Jenna Horstman’s kill average has surged to 2.72 and she has a .292 kill efficiency.
Kayla Gesink has a 10.26 assists per set average and she puts down an average of 1.1 kills per outing with a .404 kill efficiency and her dig average is 2.56. Kayla Broekhuis leads the team with a 4.85 dig average and she has 19 ace serves. Jocelyn Bousema’s dig average is 1.76 and she has 19 ace serves. Celaine Haan leads the team with 25 aces and she also gets to nearly a dig per set. Meghan Krausman and Elizabeth Kiel are averaging 1.9 and 1.51 kills per outing with Krausman getting to 1.38 digs per contest.
LAST ACTION… Dakota Wesleyan lost to Mayville State on Saturday 25-10, 25-16, 25-16. The Tigers had as many kills as errors to flatten out their kill efficiency at .000. The Tigers totaled 41 digs and scored three points on blocks and one on an error. Mayville State took advantage of nine points on blocks and another four service aces and hit for a .310 kill efficiency. Hammer had eight kills and Kruse seven and Garcia put up 14 assists. Stehly accounted for 10 digs and Katie Lindow had the lone service ace for the Tigers.
Dordt turned away Doane 25-11, 25-15, 25-20 on Saturday at the De Witt Gym as the Defenders hit for a .422 kill efficiency and committed just five hitting errors for the night. Jenna Horstman had 14 kills and Brooke Wolterstorff eight and Elizabeth Kiel six. Kayla Gesink had 28 assists and had seven digs. Kayla Broekhuis got to 19 digs and had Dordt’s lone ace serve.
HISTORY… Dordt is 26-0 since 1998 against Dakota Wesleyan. Dordt won last year’s meeting Sioux Center on October 23 by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 25-10. Floen and Danae Geels each had ten kills and Gesink had 38 assists. Sam Sandau had 12 kills to lead Dakota Wesleyan and Jung put up 43 assists. Dordt won the match at the Corn Palace on September 12 by scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-21. Floen had 11 kills and Geels seven with Gesink putting up 28 assists and Broekhuis had 11 digs. Rachel Tinklenberg had eight kills and Sandau seven in the loss and Jung was credited with 25 assists.
WHERE WE GO FROM HERE… Dakota Wesleyan is scheduled to host Morningside on Friday and will travel to Briar Cliff on Tuesday, October 15.
Dordt has a rare weekend off before returning to play on Wednesday, October 16 when they travel to Morningside.
