Dordt Cross Country Prepares For Races In Kansas

Meet Time… A Pre-Nationals race will be run on Saturday, October 12 at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kansas.  The women’s race starts at 12:30 and the men’s race gets underway at 1:30.  The races are run on the same course as the NAIA National Championships in November.  Rim Rock Farm is the home site for the Kansas University Jayhawk Cross Country team and has hosted competitions since 1972.  Rim Rock Farm is located at 2276 Burnett Lane; Lawrence, Kansas.

Participants…36 schools will send women to the meet and 35 schools will field at least one runner in the men’s race.  A total of 342 women are registered to run and 346 men are set to start the race.

Last Time… The Dordt College Defender women’s cross country team finished 11th out of 33 teams at the Roy Griak Invite hosted by the University of the Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota on Saturday morning, September 28. The Defenders totaled 256 points in the field that featured 356 runners.

Lauren Opp and Jordyn Visscher were 22nd and 28th overall in times of 23:29 and 23:36 respectively. Kayla Byl and Abby De Vries both finished the 6,000 meter course in a time of 23:58 for 58th and 59th respectively and the Defenders completed their scoring with a time of 24:38 from Renee Buikema for 89th place. Katie Bonnema and Kelsey Lewis provided the Defenders with a time of 24:48 and 24:54. The Defenders total spread was 1:25. Bonnema finished 100th and Lewis 107th. Opp was the second NAIA runner to place in the field.

Augustana (South Dakota) won the Division II title with a team total of 83 points and was led by Runa Falch’s time of 21:34.
Among the NAIA teams in the field the Defenders finished second to Olivet Nazarene’s 226 points.

The Dordt College Defender men’s cross country team finished 20th at the Roy Griak Invite. The Defenders totaled 524 points in the meet that featured 40 teams and 458 runners.

The Defenders were led by Nathan Jackson’s time of 26:51 for 61st place and Nick VanderKooi crossed the line in 26:54 for 69th. Chris Postma and Tim Bierma ran 118th and 124th and were separated by just three seconds at 27:30 and 27:33. Derek Opp completed Dordt’s scoring with a time of 27:59 for 152nd. Jeremy Van Woerden and Steve Kelly paced out times of 27:59 and 28:26 for 153rd and and 173rd to complete Dordt’s scoring.

Augustana (South Dakota) won the Division II title with a team total of 53 points. Pittsburg State’s Adam Volkert won the meet in a time of 25:11 on the 8,000 meter course.

Poll…The Dordt women are no. 9 in this week’s national poll, dropping one spot in the voting.  The only other GPAC women’s team in the poll is Doane at no. 18.  The Defender men are no. 24 in the ranking, up one spot from the October 2 vote.  Concordia and Morningside are rated no. 12 and no. 18 respectively.

Next… Dordt will be off until Saturday, October 26 when the Defenders run at the Mount Marty Invite in Yankton, South Dakota.  The Mount Marty race is the final competition before the GPAC Championships on November 9.
