Defender Football In Lincoln Saturday

THE FOE… Nebraska Wesleyan is 3-2 in the league and 3-3 overall and the dropped out of the NAIA Top-25 Coaches’ Poll last week after standing at no. 22 the week before.  Wesleyan won three games in a row over Briar Cliff, Northwestern and Doane but lost a 19-3 decision to Concordia on October 12.

The Prairie Wolves are rushing for 124.3 yards per game and allow 135.5 yards per outing.  Passing numbers are just about dead even with teams throwing for 185 yards against Wesleyan and they get 186 yards per game through the air.  Wesleyan has turned the ball over 13 times and has teams have forced 12 Wesleyan turnovers.

Dustin Bryant has run for 571 yards on 102 carries and has three touchdowns and a 5.6 yards per carry average.  Joey Jones has 185 yards on 70 carries and has a 2.6 yards per carry average with three touchdowns.  Tyler Francis is 110-208 through the air for 1077 yards and has four touchdowns with six interceptions.  Connor Zumpfe has 20 catches for a 12.8 yards per catch average and has one touchdown.  Brooks Erhart has 14 catches for 10.4 yards per catch with one touchdown.  Corey Jones and Dustin Bryant have 12 and 11 catches this season.

Taylor Tekolste leads the Prairie Wolves with 43 tackles and four sacks and an interception.  Brandon Reeves has 42 tackles with an interception and Phil Latimer has been in on 40 tackles with 9.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks and an interception.  Kalen Vander Berg has 40 takles as well and has four tackles for loss. Eight different players have one interception each and Tekolste has two fumble recoveries.

Joel Wiedel and Corey Jones have three punt returns.  Brooks Erhart has nine kick returns for an 18.0 average while Wardyn and Wiedel each have five returns for a 20.0 average.  Aaron Lorraine is 8-10 on point after attempts and he is 7-9 on field goals with a long of 46 yards.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 0-4 this season in the GPAC and 2-4 overall with wins over Dakota State and Trinity Bible.  The win over Trinity Bible snapped a four game losing streak.

The Defenders have run for 1387 yards this season which is a 231 yards per game average and they allow 1206 which is a 201 yards per game average.  Dordt doesn’t rely on the pass much and has 422 yards while opponents throw for 230 yards per game.  Dordt has forced 11 turnovers while giving the ball up 13 times.

Lenard Manuel has 64 carries for 307 yards and a 4.8 yards per carry average with three touchdowns.  Daniel Fennig has 275 yards on the ground and has an 8.1 yards per carry average with two touchdowns.  Erin Franics has 235 yards rushing and two touchdowns.  Thomas Newman also has two touchdown runs and 185 yards on the ground.  Newman has completed 15-37 passes with three touchdowns and three interceptions and 256 yards.  Sam Verhulst has 12 catches for 264 yards and three touchdowns with a 22.0 yards per catch average.  Darryl Van Grouw has six catches for 14.2 yards per catch and two touchdowns.

Trai Pickney has returned nine kicks with a 17.1 yards per return average and Fennig has seven returns with a 16.6 yards per return average.  Both Fennig and Pickney have three punt returns and Fennig’s average is 17.0.  Heath Boonestroo has punted 34 times with a 38.7 yards per punt average and Barry Dykstra is 15-16 on point after attempts.

Seth Vande Voort has made 34 solo tackles and has 31 assisted stops with an interception.  Jake Atkinson has 32 solo tackles and 17 assisted tackles and has an interception as well.  Cole McClain has made 44 tackles and Sean Quinlan has 43.  Seven different Defenders have at least one interception and Camren Pitre leads the team with two.  Micah Applegate has a pair of quarterback sacks.

PREVIOUSLY…Concordia beat Nebraska Wesleyan 19-3 on October 12 with the Prairie Wolves score coming at the 7:04 mark of the second quarter to cut the lead to 6-3.   Concordia got a score right before the half ended and then tacked on a score early in the third quarter to win 19-3.  Wesleyan was outgained 338-258 overall and 181-150 on the ground.  Bryant ran for 131 yards on 16 carries and Francis was 14-31 in the air for 108 yards and had two interceptions.

Dordt handled Trinity Bible on Saturday by a 56-27 margin after leading 56-8 midway through the fourth quarter.  The Lions scored three touchdowns late to make the score more respectable.  Dordt ran for 315 yards led by Daniel Fennig’s 104 yards and Manuel had 53 yards and Francis 50.  Nine different players had at least two carries for the Defenders. 

Thomas Newman attempted just six passes and completed three of them, one for a touchdown to Darryl Van Grouw to open the scoring.  Chris McDaniel had eight tackles and Seth Vande Voort six in the win.

HISTORY… Nebraska Wesleyan leads the series 5-0 and won last year’s game 27-7, using a three touchdown first quarter to get the breathing room they needed.  Wesleyan scored on a Wardyn interception return to start the scoring and was up 21-0 before Dordt put together an eight play, 53 yard drive capped by an Erin Francis two yard run.  Aaron Lorraine had a pair of field goals to finish the scoring. Dordt was outgained 308-113 with Wesleyan getting 71 yards from Bryant on the ground and Francis as 20-34 in the air for 169 yards.  Dordt’s Fennig had 34 yards on eight carries and Kyle Henricks was 8-26 passing for 54 yards and threw four interceptions in the loss.  Francis had 13 yards on three receptions while Wesleyan’s Bryant had five catches for 50 yards.  Wardyn made 11 solo tackles for the Prairie Wolves while Vande Voort had seven solo and five assisted tackles.  Sam Ashmore also had a big game for the Defenders with seven solo stops and there assisted stops.

AROUND THE CORNER… Nebraska Wesleyan has a week off before traveling to Mitchell, South Dakota to face Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday, November 2.
