Professor van Vliet is featured author for Dordt Writes event

December 2, 2013

The December Dordt Writes event will feature Dordt College Professor of Economics Dr. Jan van Vliet. All are invited to share a cup of coffee and a cookie and hear him talk briefly about his book, The Rise of Reformed System: The Intellectual Heritage of William Ames, at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 6, in the John and Louise Hulst Library on the campus of Dordt College.

The book examines the significance of the thoughts of Puritan William Ames (1576-1633). Dr. van Vliet argues that Ames built on existing, but as yet undeveloped and uncoded, thought of Reformed and Puritan forerunners to construct an early theological system on the twin pillars of covenant theology and piety, the theological Reformed system that is with us today.

In this persuasive argument, Dr. van Vliet radically corrects the way history has written Ames, a historiography that minimized Ames’s influence.

Dr. van Vliet received his B.A. in economics from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario; an M.A. in economics from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario; an M.T.S. from Tyndale University College and Seminary in Toronto, Ontario; and his Ph.D. in historical and theological studies from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
