Dordt Pair Honored By AVCA

(Monday, December 9; Sioux Center, Iowa)  Dordt College volleyball players Kayla Gesink and Brooke Wolterstorff have been accorded national honors by the American Volleyball Coaches’ Assocation (AVCA) for the recently completed 2013 season.

Gesink claimed Third-Team  All-American honors and was a First-Team All-Region honoree as well.  She claims the honor after putting up an average of 10.48 assists as Dordt recorded a 25-9 mark this season.  Gesink averaged 1.1 kills with a .406 kill efficiency and she had 17 service aces and averaged 2.25 digs per contest.  Gesink was also a First-Team All-GPAC pick this season and she claimed All-Tournament Honors at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship.  She is also a 2013 NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

Wolterstorff was named the 2013 AVCA NAIA Freshman of the Year  after claiming the AVCA Regional Honor last week.  She was an all-region selection and also earned All-American Honorable Mention honors after averaging a team high 3.11 kills per set with a .290 kill efficiency and she got to 2.44 digs per set.  Wolterstorff had a team high 38 ace serves and averaged 0.63 blocks per outing.

Both players appeared in all 126 sets for the Defenders this season as Dordt appeared in the NAIA National Volleyball Championships Final Site in Sioux City, Iowa for the first time since 2008.  Dordt advanced out of pool play at the event for the first time since 2003.
