Basketball Tips Off 2014 With Concordia

GAMETIME… Dordt will host Concordia on Saturday, January 4 starting at 2:00 with the women’s game and the men’s contest will get underway at about 4:00. SCOUTING REPORT…The Concordia women are 13-3 and 7-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs’ lone loss in the GPAC is to Hastings on November 26, 94-89 and they are ranked no. 7 in the NAIA Coaches’ Top-25 Poll.
Drew Olson’s team is averaging 88.1 points per game and allows 75.7 points per contest and holds a 39.0-38.7 rebounding edge. Where Concordia enjoys most of its success is in forcing 23.4 turnovers per game while committing 15.1 per contest. Concordia makes 44.0 percent of its field goals and opponents are shooting for a 43.4 percent success rate.
Kristen Conahan has a 17.4 points per game average and Bailey Morris is averaging 16.9 points per game with 3.7 rebounds and a team high 4.3 assists per game. Tracy Peitz knocks down 14.0 points per game and grabs 4.5 rebounds with 2.6 assists. Jericca Pearson averages a team high 6.6 rebounds and scores 12.1 points per game.
The Concordia men are 2-6 in the GPAC and 5-10 overall. The two wins for Concordia in league play are over Doane and Mount Marty.
The Bulldogs are getting outscored 83.2 to 73.1 and they are getting outrebounded 38.7-33.9. Concordia gives up 17.6 turnovers per game and give up 13.1 possessions per contest and teams are making 43.5 percent of its field goals while teams are making 44.6 percent of their field goals against them.
Adam Vogt averages a team high 15.3 points per game and Chandler Folkerts is putting in 11.7 points per game. Robby Thomas is a do it all player for the Bulldogs and is good for 11.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest. Micah Kohlwey scores 7.6 points per game and is coming off a 17 point outburst against Kansas Wesleyan.
DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 8-7 overall and 2-5 with conference wins over Doane and Mount Marty in late November.
Dordt is averaging 71.8 points per game and opponents are scoring 70.6 points per game against the Defenders. Dordt holds a slight 39.1-38.4 rebounding average and make 41.1 percent of the field goals the team attempts.
Kara Van Dyke is god for 12.7 points and a team high 8.1 rebounds per game. Danelle Boone’s scoring average is 7.6 and she has made 25-77 three-point field goals. Kayla Broekhuis is good for 6.8 points and has played in four games since joining the team at the conclusion of the volleyball season. Kim Kroeze and Jasmin Schelhaas average 5.3 and 5.2 points per game respectively and Abby Chapman is at 4.3 points per game. Jessica Jelsema scores 4.8 points and takes down 4.7 rebounds per game.
Elise Maresh and her 16.2 points per game average are out of action for the near future and she was grabbing 4.2 rebounds per game through her final appearance on December 19. Jaimie Kok has been out of action since breaking a finger and was averaging 12.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game before her injury. Kok’s last game played was on December 7 against Concordia.
The Defender men are 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the GPAC.
Dordt is scoring 92.6 points per game and allow 76.7 points per outing. Dordt’s rebounding margin is 43.2-28.9 and the Defenders are converting 38 percent of its three-point attempts and 50.7 percent of the field goals they take. Dordt commits 13.2 turnovers and force 12.6.
Kyle Lindbergh leads the team with 17.2 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.1 blocks per contest and he is making 55.4 percent of his field goal attempts. Dalton Franken’s scoring average is 16.0 and his is making 50 percent of his three-point tries (17-34). Franken also grabs 4.4 rebounds per game. Austin Katje is at 13.6 points per game and 3.9 rebounds and he is making 48.6 percent of his three-point attempts (36-74). Tyler Wolterstorff scores 11.5 points and gets 3.9 rebounds and Nathan Rindels is converting 9.6 points per game with 4.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists. David Den Herder’s scoring average is 7.4 in mostly a reserve role and Alex Terpstra’s scoring average is 6.9 points per game.
LAST TIME… The Concordia women beat Evangel (Missouri) on December 31 by a 77-62 margin in a game played in San Antonio, Texas. Evangel led 30-28 at halftime but the Bulldogs converted 21-42 shots in the second half while limiting Evangel to 11-25 success in the second half. Concordia had 14 offensive rebounds and they forced 24 turnovers. Bailey Morris scored 16 points and had two assists and two steals. Becky Mueller had 15 points and six rebounds and Kristen Conahan scored 14 with three assists.
The Defender women lost 73-59 to Westmont (California) in Santa Barbara, California. Dordt trailed 29-25 at the half and tied it at 33-33 but Westmont pulled away in the second half by outscoring Dordt 44-34. Kayla Broekhuis had a team high 21 points while going a perfect 6-6 from the field and 6-7 on free throws. Kara Van Dyke added 11 points with eight rebounds and Mycah Hulst added ten points and nine rebounds with four blocked shots.
The Concordia men went on the road and beat Kansas Wesleyan 75-72 on December 30. The Bulldogs were up 31-26 at halftime and trailed briefly near the midpoint of the second half. The last deficit was at 53-51 with 7:25 left in the game. Vogt led the Bulldogs with 18 points and six assists and Kohlwey added 17. Thomas scored 13 and grabbed six rebounds and Folkerts had 12 points and nine rebounds. Concordia was 25-52 from the field and 11-25 on three-point baskets and had a 37-25 rebounding advantage.
The Defender men beat Martin Luther on December 19 in New Ulm, Minnesota by a 80-56 final after leading 42-15 at halftime. Terpstra had 17 points and was helped by five three-pointers and Austin Katje converted 13 points. Bryan Sumner tossed in 11 and Dordt held a 41-24 rebounding advantage. Twelve players scored for the Defenders and no player played more than 21 minutes in the final outing before 2014 for the Defender men.
HISTORY… The Concordia women lead the series 19-7 and they won the December 7 meeting in Seward, Nebraska 89-66. The Bulldogs got up early and were up 49-36 at halftime. Concordia had a 47-33 rebounding advantage and forced 28 turnovers. Jaimie Kok topped Dordt with 20 points and eight rebounds. Danelle Boone and Elise Maresh each had eight points and Boone had four assists. Becky Mueller had 20 for Concordia and Tracy Peitz had 16 points and seven rebounds with Bailey Morris had 15 points coming off the bench.
The Defender men lead the series 19-6 and they won the meeting in December in Seward. Dordt was up 50-35 at halftime and ended up winning 93-70. Dalton Franken had 21 points and Tyler Wolterstorff scored 16 with seven rebounds. David Den Herder came off the bench to score 14 and snagged six rebounds and Kyle Lindbergh had 12 points and eight rebounds. Dordt had a 48-34 rebounding advantage and made 47.2 percent of its field goal attempts. Concordia was paced by Vogt with 15 points and Thomas had 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Folkerts, hampered by foul trouble, scored 11 and had six rebounds.
MILESTONES… Austin Katje passed Brad Boer into 15th place all-time with 1,205 current points and is five behind Kyle Van Arendonk and ten behind Jerry Vande Pol. Kyle Lindbergh’s 1,088 puts him one in front of Steve VerMeer for 23rd all-time. Lindbergh recently passed Trevor Wolterstorff for 3rd all-time in rebounding and has 759 for his career. He also ranks 14th in assists with 235 and 7th in career steals with 142.
Kara Van Dyke is closing in on 1,100 points and has 1,095 and she passed Linda Mabie for 8th all-time on the California trip. Van Dyke also ranks 8th all-time in rebounding with 692.
NEXT… The Defenders are on the road to face Morningside on Wednesday, January 8 and will return home to face Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, January 11. Concordia is in the midst of a five game road swing as they will face Midland in Fremont, Nebraska on Wednesday and they will go to Orange City to face Northwestern. Oddly, Concordia has just four home games remaining on the schedule after playing nine games at home in 2013.
