Dordt ag department releases 2013 test plot results

Field variety test plot results from the Dordt College agriculture department in Sioux Center are now available.

Fourteen field trials were conducted at Dordt College’s Agriculture Stewardship Center (ASC) fields north of Sioux Center. Students from Dordt’s Field Crop Production and Management class harvested the plots under the supervision of Mike Schouten, the ASC manager. Students also helped analyze the collected data with the assistance of Dr. Chris Goedhart, professor of agriculture. Josh Sievers, Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm’s superintendent, and Joel DeJong, Iowa State University extension agronomist, collaborated with Dordt College and helped publicize the research data as part of ISU’s Farmer Assisted Research and Management program.

Students who participated in the field sized-comparison study were Josh De Waard (Stickney, South Dakota), Derek Grace (Mitchell, South Dakota), Trent Kischer (Albert City, Iowa), Parker Merritt (Mason City, Iowa), Brian Miller (Iowa City, Iowa), Vern Oostra (Hull, Iowa), and Dallas Van Gelder (Manhattan, Montana).

The Dordt trials were planted in strips of two equipment-widths across the entire field. Because these strips lie close to one another, field variability between treatment strips is minimized. The treatments were replicated at least three times to overcome chance field variations. In addition, plot order in each block was chosen at random. Replication, randomization, and field-size strips ensure that the results will be applicable to farmer’s field situations and will be statistically valid.

The plot averages are presented with a statistical measurement called the ‘least significant difference’ (LSD). If the difference between two varieties is greater than the LSD, then the difference is considered significant. Dordt publishes the results at an LSD of .05 which means we are 95% confident that any reported significant differences resulted from treatment or variety differences rather than from random variation.
