Winners announced in Economics Poster Contest

January 13, 2014

A picture is worth a thousand words, and the pictures that students in grades two through six produced spoke volumes about what they’ve learned about the fundamentals of the U.S. economic system.

In their classrooms, students learned about goods and services, scarcity, specialization, productive resources, opportunity costs, and producers and consumers. To demonstrate their understanding, each student created a unique poster that visually expressed one of these concepts.

“The poster contest proved to be a great way for students to learn about economic concepts while having fun creatively demonstrating their understanding of the economy,” said Erica Vonk, assistant director of the Center for Economic Education.

The Dordt College Center for Economic Education held the Economics Poster Contest with co-sponsors American State Bank, Northwest Bank, Peoples Bank, and Primebank. Twelve winners and 12 honorable mentions were selected out of the 253 entries from seven regional schools. The winning posters are included in a 12-month color calendar. Winners receive a certificate, small gift, and calendar of their drawings. Judging was conducted by five business and education students from Dordt College.

“Our college judges were very impressed with the level of economic understanding by the second through sixth grade students. We know that many college-level students are never exposed to that terminology before they take a college class,” said Vonk. “This project demonstrates excellent teachers that are willing to go above and beyond for their students to cover voluntary standards in the state of Iowa, and I commend them for their effort.”

Dordt College’s Center for Economic Education works with area schools and teachers to teach financial literacy to their students. The Center for Economic Education is the only faith-based economic center in the nation, and also holds several competitions throughout the year including the poster contest, the stock market game, and a business management competition.
