Dordt Hosts Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday in GPAC Clash

SCOUTING REPORT… The Dakota Wesleyan Tiger women are 15-9 overall and 8-7 in the GPAC.  The Tigers have lost three games in a row since a four game winning streak culminated with back to back home wins over Briar Cliff and Midland.  Since the win over Midland on January 26 the Tigers have lost to Morningside (twice) and Doane.   The Tigers played Morningside twice in the span of five days because of a postponement from December 4 to Monday, February 3.  The Tigers started the season with six wins in their first seven outings.

The Tigers have outscored teams 76.4-70.1 and outrebound teams 40.6-40.1. Dakota Wesleyan is converting 43 percent of its field goals and allows opponents to make 39.1 percent.  The Mitchell, South Dakota based team also holds an advantage in the turnover department where they have forced 386 and given up 360.

Amanda Hart leads a quartet of players in double figures with a 12.4 average.  Hart has converted 70-214 three-point shots and 100-277 overall.  She takes down 3.6 rebounds per game and averages just over two assists per game.  Celeste Beck adds 12.0 points per game and appears predominately as a reserve while converting 45.3 percent of her field goals and she takes down 4.4 rebounds per game.  Katie Johnson scores 11.8 points per game and makes 63.5 percent of her field goals and has a 6.2 rebounding average.  Kim Johnson adds 10.3 points per game and rakes in 5.6 rebounds per contest.  Erica Herrold scores 8.8 points per game and Micaela Erickson is at 7.4 points per contest with 4.7 rebounds.  Taylor Piper hands out just under four assists per game and Kim Johnson averages right at three per game.

The Tiger men are 13-12 overall and 6-9 in the GPAC after four losses in a row.  Wesleyan had won eight out of nine from December 14 to January 22 with the lone loss in that span a road overtime setback to Northwestern.  A loss to Midland on January 26 started their slide and they have a pair of losses to Morningside and a single loss to Doane in the four game slide.

The Tigers are scoring78.2 points per game and allow 72.9 points per outing while converting 44.5 percent of their field goals and allowing opponents to convert 44.4 percent of their field goals.  The Tigers average 37.8 rebounds per game and allow 33.6.  The Corn Palace occupants are 8-5 at home and 5-6 in games away from home.

Jalen Voss tops the Tigers with a 20.8 points per game average and he hauls down 7.2 rebounds per game.  Voss converts 56.2 percent of his shots and also averages over a blocked shot per game. Kris Menning is scoring 15.4 points per game and Trae Bergh is scoring 15.2 points per game with 84-190 success from the three-point line.  Jade Miller converts 12.3 points per game and takes in 4.7 rebounds per game.  Luke Bamberg is scoring 7.4 points per game and Tate Martin’s average is 6.8 points per game.  Martin leads the team with 6.5 assists per game.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 11-13 overall and 4-11in the GPAC and are 2-2 in their last four games, beating Mount Marty and Dakota State and losing to Briar Cliff and Hastings. 

Dordt is averaging 71.9 points per game and allow 71.6 points per game and they are getting outrebounded by a 38.8-37.8 margin.  The Defenders convert 42.7 percent of their field goals and opponents are good for 39.3 percent success.  Dordt has 450 turnovers in 24 games while forcing 413 turnovers.

Kara Van Dyke’s scoring average is 13.8 points per game and she gets 7.4 rebounds per game with a little over a steal and assist per game.  Jaimie Kok scores 11.1 points per game and has converted 55 percent of her field goal attempts while snagging 6.4 rebounds per contest.  Kayla Broekhuis has scored 11.0 points per game in 14 contests and she has made 32-64 three-point shots.  Jasmin Schelhaas scores 6.6 points per game and has 43 assists in 20 games and Kim Kroeze’s scoring average is 5.1 points per game.  Dordt is missing two significant offensive contributors as Elise Maresh was sidelined at the semester break with a 16.2 points per game average and Danelle Boone’s scoring average was 8.7 points per game before she was injured in the Dakota State game on January 24.

The Defender men are 23-2 overall and 14-1 in the GPAC and have won seven games in a row since a conference loss to Morningside on January 8.    Dordt’s other loss is a November 8 setback to Davenport (Michigan). 

Dordt is averaging 89.6 points per game this season with a defensive average of 75.6.  Dordt also holds a 41.6-30.9 rebounding advantage and they have 300 turnovers in 25 games to 324 for opponents.  The Defenders convert 49.1 percent of their field goals and 37.5 percent of their three-point shots.  Opponents have been limited to 44.4 percent shooting and they make 37.8 percent of their three-pointers.  Dordt has held a significant advantage at the free throw line where they have made 537-737 attempts for 72.9 percent success and opponents have made 367-504 for 72.8 percent.

Kyle Lindbergh is scoring 16.2 points per game with a 10.6 rebounding average.  Lindbergh also has a 2.7 assist average to go with 1.5 blocked shots and 1.2 steals per contest.  Dalton Franken’s scoring average is 15.9 points per game and Austin Katje is at 14.5 points per game.  Fanken has a 4.5 rebounding average and Katje a 4.3 average.  Katje has made 59-132 three-pointers for 44.7 percent success.  Nathan Rindels scores 11.1 points per game and has a 4.9 rebounding average and he hands out 3.5 assists per game.  Tyler Wolterstorff is scoring 10.9 points per game and he takes down 4.2 rebounds per contest.    David Den Herder has appeared in all 25 Dordt games and has a 6.8 average to go with 4.2 rebounds per game.  Alex Terpstra scores 5.8 points per game and Bryan Sumer 4.3.

LAST TIME…The Dordt women lost a 65-62 decision to Hastings on Saturday with a three-point shot at the buzzer coming up just short.  Kayla Broekhuis and Jaimie Kok each had 15 points and Kok took down eight rebounds.  Kara Van Dyke scored ten and had nine rebounds.  Dordt trailed by as many as 13 in the second half before staging a late comeback.

The Dakota Wesleyan women lost to Morningside on Monday by a 79-66 margin after trailing 39-33 at halftime.  The Tigers were outrebounded 51-37 and converted 22-64 shots from the field.  Celeste Beck scored a team high 20 points and Amanda Hart scored 12.

The Defender men were 78-74 winners over Hastings as they fought off the Broncos in the second half.  Dordt led by ten at halftime before Hastings tied at the midpoint of the second half at 51-51.  An Austin Katje three-point basket started a ten point run by the Defenders that ended up being enough.  Katje had a career high 33 points in the win while Nathan Rindels and Kyle Lindbergh had 11 points each.  Lindbergh also grabbed a game high 15 rebounds.  Dordt converted 33-46 free throws in the win.

The Tiger men lost to a hot shooting Morningside team 101-82 after trailing 61-34 at halftime.  Morningside converted 58.3 percent of their field goal attempts and 50 percent of their three-point shots.  Trae Bergh scored 20 while Jade Miller scored 19 with four rebounds.  Tate Martin chipped in with 12 and Luke Bamberg scored ten.

HISTORY… The Defender women trail the series 35-24 with Dakota Wesleyan winning the December 11 meeting 81-56.  Dordt was led by Elise Maresh with 22 and Kara Van Dyke scored nine with 12 rebounds.  Dakota Wesleyan had four players in double figures with Katie Johnson leading them with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Dordt scored a 92-81 win over Dakota Wesleyan on December 11 to extend the series lead to 33-30.  Dalton Franken scored 22 and Austin Katje added 20 with nine rebounds.  Kyle Lindbergh had 17 points and 17 rebounds with Nathan Rindels scoring 12 with eight rebounds and three assists.  Jalen Voss recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds in the loss and Trae Bergh had 14 points.  Dordt trailed 42-40 at halftime and outscored the Tigers 52-39 in the second half. 

NEXT… Dakota Wesleyan is scheduled to host Concordia this weekend.

Dordt will be off until Wednesday, February 12 when it hosts Morningside. 

RANKINGS…. The Defender men hold the no. 3 spot in the poll released Tuesday, February 4.  Midland and Hastings are no. 7 and no. 15 respectively and Morningside is receiving votes.  Cardinal Stritch (Wisconsin) is the no. 1 team again this week in the poll.

Four GPAC teams are in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll.  Northwestern is no. 3; Hastings no. 5; Concordia no. 9; Morningside no. 10 and Dakota Wesleyan no. 25.  The University of St. Francis is no. 1 in this week’s polling done by 14 coaches across the country.
