Three Dordt Women Named Scholar-Athletes

(Monday, March 17; Sioux Center, Iowa) Kayla Broekhuis (Senior; Edgerton, Minnesota), Elise Maresh (Senior; Beresford, South Dakota) and Danelle Boone (Senior; Sibley, Iowa) have earned NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete honors for the recently completed 2013-14 season.

Broekhuis is a Health Human Performance: Exercise Science major and averaged 10.7 points per game this season for the Defenders and took down 3.7 rebounds per contest and had a team high 44 three-point baskets made.  Broekhuis also claimed the honor in 2012-13 and was an All-GPAC honorable mention honoree this season.

Maresh majors in Agriculture: Animal Science and has a minor in Biology.  She averaged 15.2 points per game for the Defenders in 17 games played.  She also took down 4.1 rebounds per game in a season where her play after Christmas was limited due to injury.

Boone claims the honor for the first time in her career and she majors in Biology.  Boone played in 23 games this season and averaged 8.5 points per game and shared team honors with Broekhuis in three-point baskets made with 44. 

243 Division II Women's Basketball student-athletes were named 2014 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.
