Dordt Baseball Travels To Peru State

GAMETIME… Dordt will face Peru State in Peru, Nebraska with the doubleheader starting at 1:00.

SCOUTING REPORT… Peru State is 9-4 this season and has outscored teams 82-43 and outhit teams 125-80.  The Bobcats have won four games in a row over Morningside and Graceland and are scheduled to face Evangel on March 20.  Peru State has won nine of its last ten games after starting the season with losses to Wayland Baptist (twice) and Sterling.

Peru State has a team batting average of .324 and is led by Seth Walston and Tommy Barnes with 21 hits each.  Walston bats .488 with four doubles and ten runs batted in and has five stolen bases.  Barnes bats .447 with four doubles and three homeruns and he has ten runs batted in.    Kadyn Glass bats .471 with 16 hits and three doubles and leads the team with 11 runs batted in.  Josh Alonzo, Derrick Davis and Randy Santiesteban all have 13 hits each and Jake Wright has ten runs batted in. 

Miguel Navarro is 3-0 on the mound with a 1.38 earned run average and has struck out 30 batters in 26 innings pitched and he has three complete games.  Vance Keller has a 2-0 record while appearing in relief in four games and Manny Arciniega is 3-1 with a 1.88 earned run average in 24 innings pitched.  Peru  State has a team earned run average of 2.64.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 7-5 this season.  Two of the losses have been by one run each, onther by two and a fourth by three runs.  The Defenders started the season with six wins in a row but were hamstrung by injuries in their games at Tucson, Arizona over Spring Break.  The Defenders were shortstaffed with Aaron Parks and Nathan Forseth unavailable to pitch late in the week.

Dordt has a .304 team batting average and have outscored teams 88-62 and outhit teams 108-95.  Cameron Gingerich has a .413 batting average with 19 hits and ten runs scored and has stolen five bases.  Andy Kollbaum has a .413 batting averge with 14 hits and four doubles while handling the bulk of the catching duties.  Jake Thayer is batting .344 and Jason Wapnick .333.  Wapnick leads the team in runs batted in with 14.  Dane LePlatt is batting over .300 with a .303 batting average and has ten runs batted in along with Jon Holwerda.  Nathan Fraley leads the team in stolen bases with eight.

Ben Van Kekerix is 2-0 for the Defenders in three appearances and he has a team high 17 1/3 innings pitched with 18 strikeouts and a 5.19 earned run average.  Aaron Parks and Cole Samuelson are both 1-0 on the mound while Josh Van Kekerix and John Drenten both are 1-1.  The Defenders have a team earned run average of 4.69.

THE SERIES… Dordt trails the series 7-0 with the two teams last playing in 2012.  Dordt lost game one of the doubleheader in Sioux Center on April 3, 2012 by a 5-3 count.  Dordt led 2-1 after two innings but Peru State broke through with three runs in the sixth and Dordt cut it to 4-3 on a Dane Le Platt homerun.  Peru State got a run for insurance in the seventh to seal it.  Nick Serrato had two hits in the game and Rayn Baas took the loss in relief of Jeremy Engbers.  Engbers struck out six in four innings and Baas went three innings and surrendered three runs—two of them earned.    Dordt lost the second game of that doubleheader 13-1 as Derek Voigt had three hits and two runs batted in for the Bobcats.
  
LAST TIME… Peru State prevailed in a doubleheader sweep of Graceland 7-0 and 7-2 on March 15. The Bobcats outhit the YellowJackets 10-3 and the Bobcats got a win by Navarro on the mound.  The second game in Lamoni, Iowa, had Peru State outhitting Graceland 11-8 and the visitors took advantage of eight Graceland errors.  Arcienega was the winning pitcher and struck out seven in seven innings of work.

Central beat Dordt 4-3 on Friday, March 14.  Central got the winning run across in the eighth inning of the scheduled nine inning game.  Dordt led briefly at 2-0 but Central came back with three in the third.  Dordt tied it with a run in the fourth but a hit batsmen with the bases loaded in the eighth forced the eventual winning run in.  Ben Van Kekerix went seven innings and wasn’t involved in the decision while allowing six hits and three runs with six strikeouts.  Dordt outhit Central 9-7 and had nine singles.  Andy Kollbaum, Dane LePlatt and Cameron Gingerich all had two hits each for the Defenders.

NEXT UP… The Defenders are scheduled to host Mayville State on Tuesday, March 25 and will open the GPAC season on Friday and Saturday, March 28 and 29 at Hastings and Doane. 

Peru State will host Culver Stockton on Saturday, March 22 and will travel to Central Methodist on Tuesday, March 25.
