Dordt College engineering graduates achieve perfect pass rate on national engineering exam

August 15, 2014

Dordt College’s 2014 engineering graduates who took the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam during their senior year have earned a perfect 100 percent pass rate on the exam administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). That puts Dordt’s engineering program far above the national average pass rate of 84 percent. Even before this year’s results were announced, Dordt’s overall FE exam pass rate of 95 percent FE surpasses some of the nation’s top engineering schools.

Twenty students took the test this past semester, which is the first step toward professional licensure as an engineer. After four years of supervised engineering work experience and passing an engineering practices examination, they will be eligible for the title of professional engineer (PE).

“While success on the FE exam is not a primary goal of our department, the FE exam results do attest to the academically gifted and hardworking students that attend Dordt to study engineering each year,” said Dordt Engineering Professor Dr. Ethan Brue. “It is a privilege to guide these students to develop their engineering gifts as Christ followers. That is our primary program goal.”

As the natural sciences programs continue to experience significant enrollment growth, the college is constructing a new Science and Technology Center. Phase one of the $20 million project open as the academic year begins in August. The new building will be better organized, allow for further growth, and will join the sciences with other academic disciplines on campus.

One of only a handful of Christian colleges that has had a fully accredited engineering program for more than 20 years, Dordt College offers a degree in engineering with concentrations in biomedical, chemical, civil and environmental, electrical and computer, and mechanical.

Since 2000, Dordt’s overall industry and graduate school placement rate for engineers is 98 percent (90 percent in major).
