Schenk coaches team to finals

Coach Dave Schenk, Dordt College Class of '88, has been named the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association Coach of the Year for Class A schools. Schenk has been coaching soccer at Trinity Christian High School for 15 years.

This year Coach Schenk led Trinity Christian's soccer team to its first-ever state play-off appearance at Hersheypark Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 15 Trinity Christian is only in its second year of participation in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). This Forest Hills, Pennsylvania, school has only 57 boys in grades 9-12, making it the smallest in the PIAA playoffs. The underdog team played the defending champion, Christopher Dock, with that team emerging as a repeat state champion in a 5-0 match.

On their road to the state finals, Trinity Christian (21-4-0) beat District 10 champion Fairview in a shootout and WPIAL champion Greensburg Central Catholic in double overtime to continue their improbable season. "We scraped by to get here," Schenk said to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "We were opportunistic, resourceful, and we ran into this team," Schenk said. "I guarantee you couldn't find a single player or parent that would have given a plug nickel on us playing in the state championship game at the beginning of the season."

Schenk said he was proud of the way his second-year WPIAL program played all the way to Hershey.
