DC Broader Vision Seminars

Business Students as Consultants. The Dordt College Business Administration Department provides opportunities for students to do consulting projects for area businesses and organizations. This blend of classroom instruction and hands-on experience gives students a great internship experience and expands the college’s impact and relevance in the community. PDS Education Project. The PDS (Professional Development School) Model, a partnership project between the Dordt College Teacher Education Program and area K-8 schools, is transforming teaching and learning. Come find out more about this unique program that strengthens K-8 learning, teacher preparation, and professional development of practicing teachers. Siblings Brunch, Campus Center. This activity is designed for pre-school to high school weekend guests. Meet promptly at 8:45 a.m. in the lower level of the Campus Center. The group will walk together for a complimentary breakfast in the Commons followed by age-appropriate activities (crafts and Game Room). DC Broader Vision Seminars

An Interdisciplinary Approach to Transform Teaching and Learning at Dordt College: Two biology professors, Dr. Tony Jelsma and Dr. Jeff Ploegstra, have tackled a project that combines students from different classes to learn about an important world problem and have come up with creative ways to tackle this problem. Jelsma and Ploegstra will be on hand to show you how this works, Science and Technology Center, room 108.

 

Genetic Engineering, cellular imaging, stem cells, and designer drugs. These are just a few of the topics that students and faculty at Dordt study and discuss, whether that be in classes, student/faculty Bible studies, or in collaborative research projects. Join us and gain a glimpse of some of our activities as we seek to develop a Christ-centered broader vision of biomedical science. Equipping Dordt Students to Engage the Music of Film, T.V., and Video Games. Dordt students are surrounded by music: They sing in our exceptional choirs, play in our outstanding bands, take individual instrument lessons, pursue their own tastes with MP3 players--to say nothing of all the music we absorb, sometimes unknowingly. In the Core 160: Introduction to the Arts portion of their curriculum, students survey different genres of music so that they can better engage musical structure, intention, and style. This presentation will outline critical approaches taught at Dordt College with regard to the music of film, television, and video games. Premier public showing of The Fourth World, B.J. Haan Auditorium.

The Fourth World is a 52-minute documentary that captures the harsh realities of slum life, telling gripping stories of “joy, perseverance, and hope,” says Mark Volkers, Dordt College digital media professor, who worked for several years on the project with Dordt students.

The Fourth World takes you inside slums on three continents to meet individuals caught up in the largest people migration in the history of the world. Envisioning a billion people is almost impossible, but seeing the stories of a handful of slum dwellers brings life to the statistics and begins the process of building understanding.

Journey with Dordt’s filmmakers to Guatemala, Kenya, and the Philippines. Listen to experts from three continents as they bring understanding to the why of slums and foreshadow what will happen if the world ignores this social powder keg much longer.

The production has received world-wide recognition and awards, including a prestigious Award of Excellence from Indie Fest. A Q and A session will follow the screening.
