DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTION
With its Avid and Premiere lab, Dordt has one of the premiere post-production facilities in this part of the nation. Avid is the industry standard for cutting and editing film and video; 90 percent of what you watch on TV and in theaters is cut on Avid.
Instead of having each Avid editing system locked to one computer and hard drive, Dordt’s Avid editing stations are all tied into an Avid ISIS, with 64 TB of storage space, providing the ultimate in collaborative filmmaking. For example, if a team shoots 15 hours of raw footage, the video is saved on the ISIS, allowing each team member on each Avid editing system to draw from the same footage and all work on the same project at the same time. That’s how Hollywood does it, and that’s how you’ll learn at Dordt, unlike at most major colleges and universities.
But it's not just Avid. We use the full Adobe suite of products, including Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, Audition, plus Sonic Fire Pro, Sorenson Squeeze, Final Draft, and more. And if that's not enough, we reserve our Digital Media Lab only for digital media and graphic design students. As one of those majors, your electronic key (fob) gives you access 24/6. Other students? Nah, they can't get in. There's just too much horsepower in this lab for nonmajors to come in to write their term papers. It's reserved for you so you can work to your heart's content. Couches, big windows, even a fridge compliment the lab, making it your home away from dorm!
In addition, a tech-enabled instructor’s podium is linked to ceiling-mounted HD projectors with a 16-foot screen and 7:1 surround sound, allowing students seated at either PC or Mac workstations to watch the instructor in action. The Adobe suite of products, which allow for animation, graphic design, professional DVD production and web design, give students complete control of every aspect of media production.

Dordt's Digital Media Production department believes in preparing students for the real world, which means we have the best gear out there. HD cameras with interchangable lenses for that total cinematic look are standard here. So is shooting in 4.6k on the latest cameras available. Dollies, LED light kits, jibs, sliders, shotgun mics, wireless mics, heavy tripods—everything you need to make award winning films—is here.
We routinely travel with our gear to location shoots far and near. "Near" might include shooting a commercial or promotional film for a business right here in the Midwest. "Far" might include a shoot in South Africa, Mexico, Guatemala, or India. You can't learn this to be a film maker by just talking about it. The more media products you make, the better you become. The better you get, the more marketable you are.
