Pursuing Your Passions
A Canadian who plays hockey: sound familiar? But if that was all you knew about Gary Huitsing, you would be terribly mistaken.
Gary's passion for hockey is equally matched by his passion for film. That's why he came all the way to Sioux Center, Iowa to study digital media production. As a digital media production student, Gary enjoys learning by getting his hands dirty through the creative process of filmmaking.
Competing in the Prairie Grass Film Challenge is one exciting way Gary is learning about making films. During the challenge, participants have 48 hours to write, shoot, and edit their work, which starts with just a line of dialogue and a prop. It's experiences like this that Gary finds so rewarding about filmmaking: "It's like the combination of every art form into one: music, pictures, and story."
As a first-year hockey player, Gary has joined his fellow Blades, as a forward, in achieving their third consecutive season qualifying for the ACHA D3 National Tournament. Gary has traveled with the team as far as Las Vegas, Nevada, and Estero, Florida, for the national tournament.
In the little spare time he has left, Gary volunteers at a local church's boys club and participates in a Bible study with his dorm wing.
So, whether he's playing hockey, making a film, or volunteering in his community, Gary has found a wide variety of ways to get involved at Dordt. "It's exciting to be at a place where everyone believes in the same God, and can discover him in all these areas of creation," he exclaimed. "God is here!"
Check out how Gary was able to combine his two passions in a short video that he filmed and edited about Dordt Blades hockey.
