Prior to joining Dordt's engineering faculty, Joel worked as a research assistant at Iowa State University on projects funded by the Portland Cement Association (PCA), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and National Concrete Pavement Technology Center. In this work, he investigated topics such as the fate and transport of mercury in portland cement manufacturing facilities, and the effectiveness of using photocatalytic concrete pavements as a method to reduce air pollution from vehicles. He also served as the primary researcher for Iowa's Clean Watersheds Needs Survey; a project which estimated the capital investment needed to meet water quality goals set by the Clean Water Act.
Joel teaches a wide array of courses in engineering, construction management, and environmental studies. Courses he has taught include Construction Materials and Methods, Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics, Introduction to Environmental Engineering, Introduction to Environmental Studies, and Structural Steel Design. He also holds professional memberships in the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).
His current research efforts seek to enhance sequential and interconnected learning in the small-college environment and develop guiding principles for an engineering curriculum that is distinctively Christian both in terms of content and pedagogy.
