Dordt College earns awards for fundraising campaign and magazine improvement

The Dordt College development and public relations/marketing departments were awarded silver and bronze awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District Six.

The development department earned silver for the fundraising campaign for the Dordt College Fund. The campaign, A Community Promise, emphasizes that each Dordt student is supported by a community of alumni, friends, and other supporters who walk alongside them every day of their college experience. This theme runs throughout print pieces, website content, social media and print advertisements, new letterhead and envelopes, and pledge cards.

Ten students were interviewed and featured on the campaign materials. The students had all received financial aid from the Dordt College Fund, had demonstrated a strong commitment to their faith, and were actively involved in academic and community life at Dordt College. Their stories helped demonstrate to supporters that financial contributions to the fund do real kingdom work and are a blessing to students in many ways.

As a result of the campaign, from fiscal year 2011 to fiscal year 2012, donations to the Dordt College Fund went up 60 percent, the number of donors for the Dordt College Fund increased by 92 percent, and the revenue from direct mail solicitation grew by 487 percent.

“We’re tremendously grateful for the response and support that allows us to keep a Dordt College education affordable for students,” said John Baas, vice president for college advancement.

The public relations and marketing department earned the bronze award in the category of Magazine Publishing Improvement for the college’s redesigned alumni magazine, The Voice.

The quarterly tabloid newsletter is now published as a magazine that comes out three times a year. A team of current and former faculty, alumni, and staff helped begin the discussion about how to best create a publication that would be relevant to all of Dordt College’s alumni.

The new magazine is organized into three sections: news, features, and alumni. Its improved design offers shorter stories that allow for easier browsing while still offering in-depth pieces about college programs and developments.

“I am very pleased that the team of professionals that make up our marketing and public relations staff have been recognized by their peers for their outstanding work,” said Baas.

CASE is a professional association that supports alumni relations, communication, development, marketing, and allied areas in educational institutions.
