Dordt students earn honors at singing competition

November 26, 2012

Of the eight Dordt College students that participated in the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) competition on November 2 and 3, at Simpson College, four became semi-finalists and one took second place in the final round.

At the competition, students Joanna Bevaart (Lacombe, Alberta), Maria Bouwkamp (Pella, Iowa), Rachel Kooiman (Doon, Iowa), and Mia Kornelis (Sioux Center, Iowa) advanced to the semi-final round. The senior women at the competition were divided into two divisions, each sending the top three singers to perform in the final round. Bouwkamp finished second in her division. The finalists performed in the large recital hall for everyone in attendance.

“Maria came to Dordt with little previous private voice instruction and experience,” said Deb Vogel, Bouwkamp’s voice instructor. “To see her come this far in a little over three years is really quite something.”

Bouwkamp studied at a music camp this past summer in Austria. She also had the opportunity to audition for the Maestro of Carnegie Hall during the summer while attending a national NATS convention with Vogel. Following the audition, she received an invitation to be in the chorus of a production of Handel’s Messiah in Lincoln Center in New York City during Thanksgiving Break.

NATS, the largest national association of teachers of singers in the world, includes over 7,000 members from 27 different countries. Dordt students competed as part of the Iowa NATS chapter, which includes all of the colleges and universities in Iowa.

The Dordt students who participated in the competition include Bevaart, Bouwkamp, Marshall Fynaardt (New Sharon, Iowa), Jon Hageman (Highlands Ranch, Colorado), Kooiman, Kornelis, Tia Nieuwsma (Sioux Center, Iowa), and Titus Wamala (Rock Valley, Iowa). Accompanists were Craig Disselkoen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Nancy Vermeer (Sioux Center, Iowa), and Nathan Walter (Norfolk, Nebraska).
