Dordt Basketball On Road At Morningside

GAMETIME...Dordt College will travel to Morningside on Wednesday.  The women’s game will start at 6:00 and the men at 8:00.   The game will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at  Results will be available at  and at when complete.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Morningside women are once again highly regarded and hold the no. 3 spot in the NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll.  The Mustangs started the season with six wins in a row before stumbling by an 80-76 margin at home to Concordia.  The Mustangs have since won three games in a row to lift its record to 9-1 overall and the Mustangs stand 4-1 in the league with wins over Hastings, Northwestern, Dakota Wesleyan and Doane.

The Mustangs score 76.0 points per game and allow teams to score 58.1 percent.  Morningside is outrebounding teams 40.6-33.3 and the Mustangs force 21.8 turnovers per game while giving the ball up 16.5 times per game. The Mustangs rely heavily on the three-point shot where they have gone 79-244 through ten games and they have limited opponents to 37.2 percent shooting from the floor while converting42.5 percent of the field goals they try while making 266-626. 

Chelsie Trask is scoring 14.4 points per game and is 23-50 on three-point shots.  Ashlyn Muhl converts 12.3 points per game and is making nearly 60 percent of her field goal tries.  Muhl is the top rebounder for the Mustangs with a 7.3 average and she has taken the most free throws for the Mustangs this season with 50 attempts and she has made 35.    Hanna Blum is scoring 7.2 points per game while Jessica Tietz and Leann Osten each convert for 6.8 and 6.7 points per game.  Blum takes down 4.7 rebounds and Tietz also takes down 4.7.  Osten tops the team with 25 assists and Shelby Beaudette has set up 23 baskets with passes.

The Mustang men are 5-6 this season and are 3-2 in the GPAC with wins over Hastings, Concordia and Dakota Wesleyan.  The losses for Morningside are to Northwestern and Doane.  The Mustangs have won two games in a row twice this season and have lost two games in a row twice.  One of Morningside’s losses is an overtime decision to Dakota State in non-conference play.

Jim Sykes’s team averages 79.7 points per game and they allow 78.2 points per outing while converting 44.1 percent of the field goals it takes.  Opponents have made 47.6 percent of the field goals shots and the Mustangs have been outrebounded 34.5-38.0.  The Mustangs have turned the ball over 131 times to 175 times for opponents.  Morningside also relies on the three-point shot with well nearly 40 percent of the field goals taken this year coming from behind the arc. 

Danny Rudeen is the leading scorer with a 22.0 points per game average and he also takes down 5.6 rebounds per game.  Tanner Ferguson is the top three-point threat with a 36-83 season so far from long range for a 12.0 points per game average.  Ferguson has taken just 18 shots from inside the three-point line this season.  Trent Miller adds 10.5 points per game with Tanner Miller at 10.1 points per outing.  Kyle Nikkel and Ryan Strand average 7.2 and 6.3 points per game respectively with Strand grabbing 5.2 rebounds per game.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Dordt women are 7-7 this season and have won two games in a row with decisions over Nebraska Wesleyan and Martin Luther in their most recent games.  The Defenders started the season with three straight losses and have won two games in a row twice. 

Dordt averages 67.5 points per game and allow 56.6 points per outing.  The Defenders are outrebounding teams 40.1-37.9 and have forced 314 turnovers to 270 for its opponents.  Dordt is converting 39.2 percent of the field goals taken while opponents are at 35.2.

Kara Van Dyke is the leading scorer and rebounder with 13.1 and 8.1 respectively.  Van Dyke converts 48.5 percent of her field goals and 26 steals and 14 blocked shots.  Kayla Broekhuis converts 11.3 points per game and she is 21-60 on three-point shots through nine games played.  Brianna Spronk dumps in 10.7 points per game and also takes in 5.5 rebounds with a team high 33 assists and 28 steals.  Elise Maresh is adding 9.3 points with 5.9 rebounds.  Jasmin Schelhaas and Danelle Boone score 6.6 and 5.7 points per game and Schelhaas is 19-50 on three-pointers and Boone 17-36.

The Dordt men are 9-3 this season after starting the year 6-0 in non-conference play.  Dordt’s losses have come to Doane, Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan. 

The Defender men outscore teams 82.2-65.8 and outrebound teams 39.2-30.7.  The Defenders are converting 50.3 percent of the field goals they try while opponents are at 40.6.  The Defenders have made 98-232 three-point shots as a team for 42.2 percent while opponents are making 33 percent of the three-pointers tried.  Turnovers are dead even at 176.

Four Defenders average double figures with Cliff Warner scoring 14.4 points per game on 45.6 percent shooting from the field and 47.7 percent three-point shooting.  Warner also averages 3.7 assists per game with 1.3 steals.  Trevor Wolterstorff averages 13.4 points per game with 6.3 rebounds and is converting 57.3 percent of his field goals.  Jordan Vogel is dumping in 12.3 points per game with 5.1 rebounds and he is making 67 percent of his field goals.  Austin Katje scores 12.0 points per game and is 21-43 from the three-point line with 3.9 rebounds.  Chris Sievers adds 9.2 points per game with 3.5 rebounds and Kyle Lindbergh is at 7.0 points per game with 6.3 rebounds.  Shawn Keizer is good for 6.8 points per game and is 17-34 on three-point shots. 

NEXT… Morningside will host Midland on Saturday while Dordt is at home with Briar Cliff Saturday afternoon.

LAST TIME… The Morningside women won a 69-48 decision on Saturday over Doane in Crete after leading 34-25 at halftime.  The Mustangs made 44.6 percent of the shots they took Saturday afternoon and were paced by Muhl and Hanna Blum with ten points each.  Morningside outrebounded Doane 43-33 and had 16 players play at least six minutes.

Morningside lost to Doane in men’s play 76-60 after leading 32-29 at halftime.  Morningside converted just 20-62 shots for 32.3 percent and got outrebounded 41-31 while allowing Doane to make 28-55 field goals.  Trent Miller was good for 20 points and Tanner Ferguson had 14 with Danny Rudeen scoring 11.  The rest of the Mustangs accounted for 15 points.  Rudeen had a team high eight rebounds and three assists.

The Dordt women beat Martin Luther on Monday night 62-42 behind 15 points by Elise Maresh and 11 by Jasmin Schelhaas.  Kayla Broekhuis converted for nine points and had three assists and five steals.  Dordt was 22-59 from the floor and held a 46-41 rebounding advantage.

The Defender men lost a 71-69 overtime decision to Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon after leading 31-26 at halftime.  Wesleyan tied the game at 61-61 at the end of regulation  and never trailed in overtime, preserving the win when Cliff Warner’s three-point shot at the horn was off the mark.  Austin Katje had 16 points, four rebounds and three assists in the loss while Jordan Vogel and Tyler Wolterstorff each had 11.  Sievers and Warner each had ten and Kyle Lindbergh had 11 rebounds.

RANKINGS...Women’s Basketball Top-25 poll for this week (December 11) features Concordia no.1; Morningside no. 3; Briar Cliff no. 6; Northwestern no. 8; Dakota Wesleyan RV.

The men’s poll released this week has Doane no. 8; Northwestern no. 10 and Dordt no. 13.  Hastings and Briar Cliff are receiving votes.

SERIES…The Morningside women lead the series 40-11 and won both games last season 66-46 and 81-66.  Dordt trailed in the December 14 in Sioux Center 31-23 at halftime before falling 66-46.  Danelle Boone scored 15 to pace Dordt while Leann Osten had 17 for the Mustangs.  The second meeting of the teams was on January 25.  This time the Defenders were down 37-33 at halftime but couldn’t keep pace in falling 81-66.  Jaimie Kok had 14 points and six rebounds with Kara Van Dyke dumping in 13.  Brittany Alfredson had 16 and Chelsie Trask had 14.

The Defender men trail the series 16-11 with the Defenders taking both games last season.  Dordt beat the Mustangs 85-74 on December 14 after leading 41-30 at halftime.  Cliff Warner had 22 for the Defenders and Chris Sievers added 17 and Jordan Vogel 16.  Danny Rudeen scored 21 for the Mustangs as Dordt held a 41-29 rebounding advantage and Dordt was 27-55 from the floor.  Game two had the Defenders in front 39-35 at halftime and the Defenders went on to win 83-74 in Sioux City in late January.  Dordt was paced by Cliff Warner’s 31 points and four assists while Austin Katje added 16.  Kevin Zoz hit for 15 and Garth Hamilton had 14.

NUMBERS…Trevor Wolterstorff has 1620 career points and ranks fourth all-time behind Gene Hospers’s 1627.  Wolterstorff also has 594 career rebounds for 10th all-time and Jordan Vogel is at 1,077 points for 22nd all-time and he has 592 rebounds and is 11th all-time.  Cliff Warner is 9th all-time in assists  and 18th in steals with 103.  Kyle Lindbergh is 17th all-time in steals with 106.

Brianna Spronk has 834 career points and is 20th all-time and she stands 13th all-time in rebounds with 543 and Kara Van Dyke has 453 which is 19th in Dordt women’s basketball.
