Dordt Basketball At Home Saturday

GAMETIME...Dordt College will host Briar Cliff on Saturday in the final GPAC doubleheader before the Christmas Break.  The women’s game gets underway at 2:00 and the men follow at about 4:00.   The game will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at  There will be a live video stream available at  Results will be available at  and at when complete.

1,000 POINT CLUB MEMBERS….Three former Dordt standouts will be in attendance and will be recognized before the men’s game.

Don VerMeer, the first ever member of the Dordt 1,000 point club will be recognized.  Don scored 1,047 points while playing for Dordt from 1963-1967.

Steve VerMeer scored 1,087 points from 1985 to 1988 and ranks fourth all-time in assists and tenth all-time in steals.

Evan Beimers played for the Defenders from 1999-2003.  He currently ranks seventh in scoring with 1,459 points and was fourth all-time when he graduated.  Beimers also is 19th in rebounding and is eighth in assists and sixth in steals.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Briar Cliff women are 11-1 overall this season and stand 5-1 in the GPAC with a seven point loss to Concordia being the lone blemish through the first six weeks of the season.  The loss to Concordia snapped a ten game winning streak to start the season.  Briar Cliff has had just one win that was by less than 12 points, a 73-67 win over Doane in Crete on November 20.

The Chargers have scored more than 73 points in all 11 of their wins and have given up 79 points in a game twice—wins over Grand View 92-79 and Northwestern 91-79. Mike Powers’s  team is averaging 82.8 points per game and they allow 65.0 points per outing.  The Chargers surrender 39.8 rebounds per game and get to 37.8 rebounds.  The Chargers make 43.9 percent of their field goals and allow 39.5 percent shooting.  Opponents are making just 21.1 percent of the three-point shots they take.  Teams are turning the ball over 28.5 times per game the pressuring Chargers turn it over 22.1 times per outing.

Kelsey Evans leads the team with a 15.2 points per game average and she latches on to 4.3 rebounds with 2.5 assists per game.  Mattie Murren adds 12.8 points per game with 3.8 rebounds and she also averages 2.5 assists per outing and nearly two steals per game.  Sarah Reeves scores 12.6 points per game but has appeared in just eight games this season while Kela Cihak is putting in 10.1 points per game.  Murren tops the team with 29 three pointers made and is converting 40.3 percent of her attempts from long range.  Summer Gordon converts for 9.5 points per game and gets 5.3 rebounds which is second on the team to Cihak’s 5.4 average.

The Briar Cliff men are 10-4 overall and 3-3 in the GPAC with wins over Dakota Wesleyan, Nebraska Wesleyan and Concordia.  The Chargers have losses in the league to Northwestern, Doane and Hastings.  The Chargers had a four game winning streak stopped by Hastings on December 8 by an 88-69 decision on the road.

Coach Nic Nelson’s second installment at Briar Cliff has scored at least 71 points in all but one game and have allowed more than 70 points once in their last five games.

Jake Shipley, a 2012 NAIA First-Team All-American, leads the team with a 17.5 points per game average and he is converting 45 percent of his shots.  He also takes down 5.1 rebounds per game.  Turner Fahey scores 11.0 points per game and he is the top assist man with a  3.5 average to go with 3.6 rebounds.  Taylor Murren is dumping in 10.5 points per game and Zach Otting is good for 10.4 points per game.  Michael Collison, a senior, is the top rebounder with a 6.2 average and John Engler is good for 5.0 rebounds per game.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt College is 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the GPAC in women’s play.  Dordt started the season 0-3 but have gone 7-5 since. 

Dordt is averaging 67.1 points per game while allowing 57.1 points per contest.  Dordt is averaging 39.3 rebounds and allow opponents 37.5  and have forced 339 turnovers through 15 games and have given the ball up 295 times.  Dordt converts 39.4 percent from the floor and foes are making 36.2 percent.  Dordt has defended the three-point line well with opponents making 26.5 percent. 

Kara Van Dyke scores 12.8 points per game and gets to 7.8 rebounds per outing and is making 47.9 percent of her field goals.  Kayla Broekhuis is scoring 11.5 points per game and has converted 24-66 three-point shots and Brianna Spronk is knocking down 11.1 points per game with 5.6 rebounds.  Elise Maresh takes down 5.8 rebounds and is scoring 9.2 points per game with Jasmin Schelhaas and Danelle Boone putting in 6.5 and 5.7 points per game respectively.

The Defender men are 10-3 overall and 4-3 in the GPAC with losses to Doane, Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan.  Dordt has played eight games on the road this season and 5-3 away from the De Witt Gym.  The Defenders have held eight opponents to less than 70 points and have scored 70 or more in 11 times.

Dordt is averaging 81.3 points per game and foes score 65.6 points per game.  The Defenders convert 49.8 percent from the floor and allow opponents to make 40.2 percent of their attempts.  Dordt holds a 40.3-30.6 rebounding edge and have made 209-309 free throws while opponents have gone to the free throw line 203 times and made 148.

Cilff Warner scores 14.9 points per game with 3.5 assists per game.  Warner has made 44-99 three-point shots this season.  Trevor Wolterstorff is good for 13.3 points per game and he takes down a team high 6.5 rebounds per game while making 55.4 percent of his field goals.  Jordan Vogel’s scoring average is at 11.8 and he is making 66.3 percent of his field goals while snagging 5.3 rebounds.  Austin Katje and Chris Sievers add 10.9 and 9.3 points per game.  Kyle Lindbergh is good for 6.1 rebounds and Shawn Keizer is scoring 6.5 points per game. 

NEXT… Dordt will face Clarke College in women’s basketball on December 29 in Orange City at 2:00.  The Dordt men travel to Florida on December 28 and 29 and will face Webber International and Warner Southern in a pair of games.  Dordt’s next conference doubleheader is a road pair at Hastings on Wednesday, January 2.

LAST TIME… The Charger women beat Hastings 82-69 on Saturday in Hastings.  Briar Cliff trailed 32-29 at halftime but outscored the hosts 53-37 in the second half.  Briar Cliff limited Hastings to 33.3 percent shooting but was outrebounded 44-33 with Hastings getting 18 offensive rebounds.  Cihak scored 24 with seven rebounds and four steals and Evans scored 16 with five rebounds and Amanda Fuller scored 13.  Mattie Murren had 15 points and four assists.

The Defender women charged back at the Morningside Mustangs on Wednesday night and came up just short 64-62 after scoring the final six points of the game.  Dordt had a shot on the final possession but had that shot blocked.  Dordt converted 20-47 shots while Morningside made 27-51 basket attempts.  Dordt was outrebounded 31-28 and both teams had 25 turnovers.  Brianna Spronk scored 16 with seven rebounds and dished two assists.  Kayla Broekhuis scored 13 and had three steals.  Kara Van Dyke dumped in nine points and Maresh had eight.

The Briar Cliff men played Hastings on Saturday and lost 88-69 after getting down 38-24 at halftime.  Clay Harrold had 14 in the loss and Fahey had 13.  Shipley was limited to nine points.  Hastings held a 31-29 rebounding advantage and forced Briar Cliff into 14 turnovers.  Tuesday night, December 11, the Chargers went outside the conference and beat AIB 86-66 after getting up 46-32 at halftime.  Shipley had 22 points and Murren13 while Fahey added 11 with six assists.  Engler came off the bench to score 11 and had seven rebounds.

The Defender men took a 70-63 decision over Morningside on the road Wednesday night, getting a 34-27 halftime lead and holding off the Mustangs in the late going as the hosts cut the lead to one.  Dordt was 23-53 from the floor  and 20-26 on free throws while Morningside was 25-70 overall and 8-13 on free throws.  Dordt had a 53-30 rebounding advantage but turned the ball over 25 times to 10 for the Mustangs.  Cliff Warner had 21 points and two assists while Trevor Wolterstorff added 12 with nine rebounds.  Chris Sievers came off the bench to score 11 and had nine rebounds.  Kyle Lindbergh had seven points and four assists with two blocks and one steal.  Tyler Wolterstorff scored six with seven rebounds.

SERIES…The Charger women lead the series 40-36 and the two teams won on their home floors last season.  The first game was a January 2 date at the Newman Flanagan Center that was tied 40-40 at halftime.  Briar Cliff outscored Dordt 55-34 in the second half and went on to win 95-74.  Maresh had 13 for the Defenders and Spronk had 11 while Jelsema added ten.  Sara Reeves scored 17 for the Chargers in a reserve role and Megan Salcedo scored 13.  The second meeting was on January 28 and Dordt won 81-57 after getting up 36-22 at halftime.  Maresh came off the bench to score 15 and Broekhuis added 12 on a day when six players hit for double figures.  Kylie Dilla was the only Charger in double figures with 10.

The Defender men trail the series with Briar Cliff 56-30 with both teams winning on their home floor.  Briar Cliff made 33-61 shots in the first meeting in Sioux City and won an 88-83 decision.  Dordt made 32-52 shots but hurt their chances with a 13-23 day at the free throw line.  Jake Shipley erupted for 31 points on 12-22 shooting and snared six rebounds.  Ben Sitzmann added 16  while Taylor Murren and Michael Collison had nine each.  Cliff Warner and Austin Katje both had 16 points and Trevor Wolterstorff had 14 points and eight rebounds.   Chris Sievers came off the bench to score 13.  Game two was in Sioux Center and the Defenders vaulted to a 36-21 halftime lead and went on to win 75-53 with Jordan Vogel scoring 14 and Warner 13 with four assists.  Collison was the only player to score in double figures for Briar Cliff with 10.
