Dordt Basketball Steps Outside Conference Wednesday

GAMETIME… Dordt College will travel to Dakota State for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, January 9.  The women’s contest starts at 5:30 and the men will get underway at 7:30.   The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu.  Results will be available at https://twitter.com/dcathletics  and at www.dordt.edu/athletics when complete.

SCOUTING REPORT… Dakota State enters the women’s contest with a 4-8 record and have lost four of the last five games they’ve played.  The  Lady T’s have wins this season over Oglala Lakota, Trinity Bible, Presentation and Minnesota-Morris.  The Madison, South Dakota based school has been a de facto GPAC member since going the independent route two years ago, which helped lead to dismantling of the Dakota Athletic Conference.  The Lady T’s will play eight games against GPAC members by the time this season is over.  Dakota State has played  four GPAC members already this season and are 0-3 against Northwestern, Dakota Wesleyan, Briar Cliff and Midland.

Dakota State is averaging 71.3 points per game while allowing 68.8 points per outing and they own a 39.1-34.9 rebounding edge.  Jeff Dittman’s team is converting 46.1 percent of its field goals while opponents make 41.5 percent.  The Lady T’s have had trouble with turnovers, giving the ball up 281 times in 12 games while forcing 228.

Kylie Westover averages 13.3 points per game with 2.3 rebounds and she is making 32.4 percent of her three-point shots.  Katy Pillar is averaging 11.3 points per game in nine outings but did not play in the most recent game, a loss to Midland on Saturday.  Alyson Drooger is scoring 10.3 points per game and she takes down 6.3 rebounds which is second on the team to Pillar’s 11.3.  Courtney Hulstein is good for 7.5 points and Cassie Jacobson is scoring at a 6.6 points per game clip with 4.4 rebounds. 

The Dakota State men are 10-4 this season and 6-1 at home.  The Trojans are 3-3 in their last six games dating back to December 8.  Dakota State has played seven games against GPAC members and are 3-4 in those games. 

Coach Gary Garner’s team has outscored teams 73.1-65.8 this season and have outrebounded teams 36.6-34.2 this season while converting 46.5 percent of its field goals.  Opponents are making 41.7 percent of the field goals they take and have been forced into 226 turnovers while Dakota State has turned it over 217 times. 

John Lamb leads the team with a 14.3 points per game average while converting 36.5 percent of his three-point shots (42-115) and he tops the team with 42 assists and 22 steals.  Terrell Newton scores 12.5 points per game with 5.6 rebounds and Yusuf Vinson adds 11.7 points per game with a team high 7.8 rebounds.  Luke Lamb’s scoring average is at 11.7 points per game and he snares 6.0 rebounds per game.  Tyrone Gordon has averaged 11.2 points per game in five games since seeing his first action against Mayville State on December 15.  Cameron Krump and Marcus Smith each average 9.5 and 9.3 points per game. 

DEFENDER NOTES…The Dordt women are 10-9 this season and 5-5 in the GPAC and have won three of the last four games they have played.  The Defenders lost three games in a row to start the season and have won two games in a row on three different occasions.

The Defenders average 69.9 points per game and allow 59.8 points per game while converting 40.4 percent of the field goals they try and allow opponents to make 37.4 percent.  Dordt has outrebounded teams 38.2-36.6 and have forced 411 turnovers in 19 outings while committing 359.  Dordt has made 313-467 free throws for 67 percent success and opponents have made 241-379 for 63.6 percent.

Kara Van Dyke leads the team with a 13.8 points per game average and she is taking down 7.6 rebounds per outing.  Van Dyke has converted 50.3 percent of her field goals and 47.5 percent of her three-point tries.  The junior from Edgerton, Minnesota also has 30 assists and 34 steals.  Kayla Broekhuis puts in 11.9 points per game and has a 4.1 rebounding average to go with 41.4 percent field goal shooting.  Brianna Spronk and   Elise Maresh score 10.8 and 10.2 points per game with Maresh taking down 6.1 rebounds.  Spronk leads the team with 41 assists and 35 steals and she also gets 5.3 rebounds.  Jasmin Schelhaas and Danelle Boone score 7.4 and 7.0 points per game.  Broekhuis has converted 33 three-point shots while Schelhaas and Boone each have 28 made three-pointers.

The Defender men are 15-3 this season and 7-3 in the GPAC and have won six games in a row dating back to an overtime loss to Nebraska Wesleyan on December 8.  The Defenders have losses to Midland, Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan and Dordt has played 11 games on the road so far this sason.

Dordt is averaging 80.5 points per game while giving up 66.7 points per outing.  The Defenders convert 50.5 percent of the field goals taken this season and hold opponents to 41.1 percent shooting,  The Defenders have converted 139-341 three-point shots for 40.8 percent and opponents are making 34 percent of their three-pointers.  Dordt holds a 39.8-30.6 rebounding edge and have converted 282-427 free throws while foes have made 192-281 free throws. 

Cliff Warner has a 15.6 points per game average to go with nearly four assists a game and over one steal per game.  Trevor Wolterstorff is converting 14.1 points per game and grabs 6.5 rebounds.  Wolterstorff is making 58.4 percent of his field goals and Warner is 68-145 on three-point shots for 46.9 percent success. Jordan Vogel’s scoring average is 12.1 points per game and he gets 5.1 rebounds and makes 64.2 percent of his field goals.  Austin Katje adds 9.6 points per game and Chris Sievers is at 9.4 points per game.  Kyle Lindbergh is averaging 7.1 points per game and is taking in 6.1 rebounds per outing.

NEXT… Dakota State will travel to Oglala Lakota on Friday night in its’ next outing in women’s and men’s play while the Defenders will host Midland in GPAC play on Saturday, January 12.

LAST TIME… Dakota State lost an 80-68 decision to Midland in Madison, South Dakota on January 5 after trailing 38-18 at halftime.  The Lady T’s made 25-59 shots from the floor and were 19-31 from the floor in the second half while outscoring the Warriors 50-42.  Alyson Drooger had a team high 14 points and she nabbed six rebounds with five assists and six blocked shots.  Cassie Jacobsen and Kylie Westover had 13 points each and Jacobsen had six rebounds with four assists.

Dordt upset no. 1 ranked and previously unbeaten Concordia on Saturday by a 96-86 margin in double overtime.  Dordt overcame a late eight-point deficit before tying the game on a three-point shot by Kayla Broekhuis with11seconds remaining in regulation.  Dordt withstood chances by Concordia to win it at the end of regulation and the end of the first overtime before scoring the first seven points of the second overtime for the eventual win.  Kara Van Dyke had 27 points and nine rebounds with four assists and one steal.  Broekhuis added 21 with eight rebounds and two steals.  Maresh knocked down 15 points and had 13 rebounds and Schelhaas scored 14. 

The Dakota State men beat Midland on Saturday, coming from behind to do so,  trailing 41-23 at halftime.  The Trojans outscored the Warriors 52-28 in the second half to take a 75-69 win.  John Lamb scored 23 points and made 5-12 three-point shots with Tyron Gordon scoring 15 with seven assists.  Krump had 17 points and 14 rebounds in the win and Luke Lamb added ten points.

The Dordt men beat Concordia on Saturday after getting up 37-36 at halftime.  Trevor Wolterstorff led the team with 20 points and he had six rebounds.  Warner had 17 points and four assists while Vogel had 16 and Sievers 12.

SERIES… The Defender women lead the series 19-17 and won the game last year in Sioux Center on January 12 by a 68-52 margin after leading 32-26 at halftime.  Van Dyke had 14 and Kayla Gesink 14 with seven rebounds and two assists.  Broekhuis added 10 points as Dordt was 26-62 from the floor and had a 37-35 rebounding advantage.  Dakota State was paced by Courtney Hamblin with 12 and Pillar had 12 with eight rebounds.  Dakota State was 18-53 from the floor and got forced into 22 turnovers while Dordt had 14 turnovers.

The Defender men lead the series with Dakota State 47-36 after leading 40-35 at halftime.  Jordan Vogel had 17 points and seven rebounds and Cliff Warner had 16 points and two assists.  Trevor Wolterstorff knocked down 15 points and had nine rebounds with Chris Sievers coming off the bench for 14 points and six rebounds.  Jesse Bean topped the Trojans with 28 points while making 11-16 field goals and Spencer Adams added 10.
