Dordt Basketball At Mount Marty Wednesday

GAMETIME… Dordt College will travel to Yankton, South Dakota to face Mount Marty in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball on Wednesday January 16.  The women’s contest starts at 6:00 and the men will get underway at 8:00.   The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu.  Results will be available at https://twitter.com/dcathletics  and at www.dordt.edu/athletics when complete.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Mount Marty women are 7-4 in the GPAC and 12-7 overall and have won four out of five games since a 74-67 loss to Webber International.  The Lancers have won three games in a row with the closest game during that run coming with a 77-68 win over Morningside in Sioux City.  Mount Marty started the season with a 3-4 record and have since gone 9-3.

The Lancers have outscored teams 71.3-60.9 and have limited teams to 38.3 percent field goal shooting while converting 41.8 percent of their shots.  The Lancers have outrebounded teams 38.2-36.9 and get to the free throw line often where they have converted 313-442 free throws while opponents have made 210-313.  Through 19 games the Lancers have turned the ball over 294 times to 350 times for opponents. 

Taylor Forsch is averaging a team high 15.2 points per game with 2.5 rebounds and has made 66-128 three-point shots this season.  April Winne is good for 12.0 points per game and she has a team high 73 assists and 27 steals.  Brittany Little is averaging 9.9 points per game with 56.6 percent shooting from the floor and she takes down 6.4 rebounds per outing.  Allison De Kam isn’t far behind with 9.8 points per game and she leads the team in rebounding with a 7.4 average.

The Lancer men are 2-9 in the GPAC and 6-13 overall with wins in the league over Northwestern and Dakota Wesleyan.  The Lancers have scored 80 or more points twice this season and have allowed 70 or more points on eight occasions this year.  The Lancers’ last win was a 73-63 decision over Johnson and Wales on December 28 and they have lost five games in a row since.  Mount Marty gave Doane everything they wanted in Crete on January 12 in a 62-59 loss.

Jim Thorson’s team is averaging 64.5 points per game and allow 68.5 points per outing while getting outrebounded 35-31.6.  The Lancers have turned the ball over 278 times in 19 games while forcing 269 turnovers.  Mount Marty is  shooting 44.5 percent from the floor and allow teams to make 44.8 percent.

The Lancer men are led by Saladin Smith with a 10.7 points per game average to go with 3.5 rebounds and he averages just over an assist per game and just below a steal per contest.  Joe Hieb is scoring 9.2 points per game and leads the team in three-pointers made with 26.  Austin Harms also scores 9.2 points per game and Jose Pena-Benjamin is tossing in 8.8 points per contest while converting 50 percent of his shots from the floor. 

DEFENDER NOTES… The Dordt women are 11-10 this season and 5-6 in the GPAC and have split their last four games and are 4-2 over their last six contests. 

Dordt is averaging 70.2 points per game while allowing 61.5 points per game.  Dordt makes 41.1 percent of its field goals and allow opponents to make 38.1 percent of the field goals they attempt.  Dordt holds a slight 37.4-36.7 rebounding advantage and has turned the ball over 392 times in 21 games to 448 turnovers for opponents.

Kara Van Dyke is averaging 13.2 points per game with a team high 7.6 rebounds per contest and makes 50.2 percent of her field goals.  Kayla Broekhuis scores 12.1 points per game and is the team leader in three-point shots made with 41 for the season.  Brianna Spronk’s scoring average is 11.3 and she takes down 5.1 rebounds and tops the team with 51 assists and 41 steals.  Elise Maresh accounts for 10.5 points per game and grabs 5.8 rebounds.

The Defender men are 16-4 this season and 8-3 in the GPAC and have won five conference games in a row.  Dordt is 11-0 in games where they have allowed less than 70 points. 

The Defenders score 79.6 points per game and allow 67.7 points per outing while outrebounding teams 39.5-30.7.  Dordt converts 49.9 percent of the field goals it tries and allow opponents to make 41.7 percent.  The Defenders also convert 40.4 percent of the three-point shots they’ve taken (148-366) while foes make 33.8 percent (131-388).  Dordt also gets to the free throw line 24 times per game and have made 322-480 for the season while opponents are converting 220-320. 

Cliff Warner scores 15.0 points per game and is making 47.1 percent of his three-point shots.  Warner has a team high 75 assists and also has 22 steals.  Trevor Wolterstorff is averaging 14.2 points per game with 6.7 rebounds and is converting 57.8 percent of his field goals.  Jordan Vogel knocks down 12.4 points per game and is good for 61.9 percent success from the floor and is taking in 5.1 rebounds per game.  Austin Katje adds 9.8 points with 3.5 rebounds and Chris Sievers is averaging 9.3 points per game with 3.6 rebounds.

NEXT… Dordt will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday while Mount Marty is hosting Midland.

LAST TIME… The Lancer women had little trouble with Doane on Saturday in taking a 33-18 halftime lead and rolled to a 66-37 final score.  Brittany Little Had 17 and Taylor Forsch 11 as the Lancers forced 18 turnovers and held Doane to 14-61 shooting from the floor.

The Defender women lost a 76-65 decision to Midland on Saturday after trailing 33-32 at halftime.  Dordt was outrebounded 44-28 in the loss and converted 25-57 field goals and 11-17 free throws while the visitors converted 24-57 field goals and 22-28 free throws.  Elise Maresh scored 19 and Brianna Spronk tossed in 17.  Jaimie Kok came off the bench to score 10 in the loss.

The Lancer men battled Doane in Crete and lost a 62-59 decision after leading 29-28 at halftime.  Austin Harms had a team high 16 points with eight rebounds and Saladin Smith had 12 points and Chevy Fischer came off the bench for nine points.  The Lancers made 26-49 shots from the floor and outrebounded Doane 29-27.  Doane got to the free throw line 23 times and made 13 while Mount Marty was 5-10 from the charity stripe.

Dordt came from nine down early in the second half to take a 78-69 win over the Midland Warriors.  The Defenders won the rebounding battle 43-31 and limited the Warriors to 45.9 percent shooting for the game.  Dordt was led by Jordan Vogel with 15 points and Trevor Wolterstorff added14 points with 11 rebounds.  Chris Sievers came off the bench to score 13 and had six rebounds.

SERIES… Dordt trails the women’s series 46-24 after Mount Marty beat Dordt on November 20 in Sioux Center by a 55-51 margin.  Dordt was topped by Kara Van Dyke in the loss with 21 and Jasmin Schelhaas had nine.  Mount Marty got 16 points from reserve Holly Hegge and Taylor Forsch had 15.

The Defender men trail the series  46-44 and won the November 20 match up 86-72.  Cliff Warner had 21 and Trevor Wolterstorff added 20.  Jordan Vogel and Chris Sievers both had 12 in the win while Jeff Larsen topped Mount Marty with 14.  Dordt  led 43-30 at halftime and Mount Marty got no closer than eight in the second half.
