National Qualifying Standards Met At Nebraska Wesleyan Invite

(Monday, January 21; Sioux Center, Iowa)  The Dordt College Defenders had four athletes reach automatic qualifying standards for the NAIA National Championship Meet to be held February 28-March 2 in Geneva, Ohio with their performance  this weekend at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite.

Briana Vander Woude (Senior; Clara City, Minnesota) reached the standard in the 60 meter hurdles and the long jump.  Vander Woude leaped 5.57 meters (18’3.25”) which surpassed the needed distance of 5.5 meters.  The distance is the sixth best in the country.  Vander Woude qualified in the 60 hurdles with a time of :08.76 which was easily under the needed time of :09.1 and is the fastest time in the NAIA so far this season.

Katie Bonnema (Junior; Ireton, Iowa) ran the fastest time in the 600 meters in the NAIA so far this season with a time of 1:33.90 which was under the needed time of 1:37.90.

Lauren Opp (Sophomore; Garner, Iowa) ran the 5,000 meters in 18:21.55, beating the needed time of 18:25.

Ryan Tholen (Senior; Tracy, Minnesota) claims a spot at the NAIA Championships with a time of 2:29.82 in the 1,000 meters which is currently the second fastest time in the country.  He needed 2:31.90 to qualify for the national meet.
The Defenders will compete at the Buena Vista Invite in Storm Lake, Iowa this Saturday, January 26.
