Cornhuskers Up Next For Dordt Blades

The puck drops at…7:30 pm on Friday, January 25 and 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 26 as the Blades go on the road to Fremont, Nebraska to take on the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers in a pair of games to be played in the Sidner Ice Arena.
“Who are they?”…the Cornhuskers recently made the move to join the MACHA and play in the same conference as the Dordt Blades. Nebraska is 8-7-0-1 this season with a 5-0-0-1 record at home; the Huskers have tallied 64 times and have given up 62.
Topping the scoring chart for Nebraska is Matti Roinila who has 12 goals and a team high 19 assists for 31 points. Michael Keogh has a team high 14 goals and a dozen helpers for 26 points while Drew Kokosa has 24 points on 10 goals and 14 assits.
Kyle Shemek has a 4-4-1 record in goal for the Huskers with a 3.58 goals against average and .860 save percentage with 231 saves and 38 goals against. Nate Sandercock has a 2-3 record with 19 goals against, a 4.33 GAA and a .880 save percentage.
The Blades…are 3-14 this season and are 2-6 against conference foes. Dordt has been scored on 85 times this season and have banged home 35 of their own. The Blades are 3-3 at home and are still looking for their first win on the road.
Brandon Fast is leading the Blades in both goals and assists with eight and nine respectively for a total of 17 points. Eric Huitsing, who has Dordt’s last two markers, has seven goals and seven assists for 14 points.
Riley Braun has spent every minute in goal this season for the Dordt College Blades and has made 645 saves with a 5.00 goals against average and a .880 save percentage.
The Series…the Blades and Huskers have clashed 16 times since 2003 with Nebraska enjoying an 11-5 record over the Blades and Nebraska has won the last 6 meetings between the two clubs. In 2012, the Blades narrowly lost 4-3 in the first outing against Nebraska before falling 10-4 the following day.
The Blades had a pair of 7-1 losses to Iowa State University on January 18 and 19. Eric Huitsing denied the shut-out bid in both games as the junior forward from Edmonton, Alberta had the lone goal for the Dordt Blades in both games.
After This Weekend…the 2012-2013 season will come to close for the Dordt Blades with a set of games against South Dakota State University. On Friday, February 1 the Blades will have their final home game of the year in the Vernon Arena at 7:30 pm before traveling to Brookings, SD on Saturday, February 2 for a 7:00 pm against the Jacks in the Larson Ice Arena.
New conference affiliation…the Dordt Blades have joined the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) which has schools in two separate divisions (Gold and Silver) and Dordt College will be a part of the Silver Division. Western Conference schools include:Iowa, Iowa State, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Missouri State (D3), Kansas (suspended operations for the 2012-2013 year), Nebraska and Dordt.
The top two teams from the North, Central and West will make the playoffs, plus 2 wild card spots decided on winning percentage. Lewis, Western Illinois, Nebraska and Dordt are all probationary teams and therefore will not be eligible for playoffs in 2012-2013.
The Coaches…Bill Elgersma returns for his fourth season behind the bench for the Blades. Elgersma helped lead the Blades to their 3rd ACHA National Tournament appearance in 2009-2010. Before taking over the reins in 2009-2010, Elgersma served as the assistant coach.
Assisting Elgersma again this season will be Adam Jeninga (6th year) and John Langeraap (4th year).
