Morningside Comes To Dordt Wednesday

GAMETIME… Dordt College will host Morningside on Wednesday, January 23 in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball.  The women’s contest starts at 6:00 and the men will get underway at 8:00.   The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu. There will also be a live webcast available at www.dordt.edu/athletics.  Results will be available at https://twitter.com/dcathletics  and at www.dordt.edu/athletics when complete

1,000 POINT CLUB…The newest member of the Dordt College 1,000 Point Club will be recognized before the men’s contest.  Cliff Warner has 1,028 points and currently ranks 27th all-time.  Warner also has 308 assists and ranks 55th in that category and is 13th in steals with 115.

A.O. DUER AWARD…Shawn Keizer will be recognized before tonight’s game for winning the  NAIA’s 2012 A.O. Duer Award.  The award is given annually to a male athlete for excellence in academics and athletics. 

SCOUTING REPORT… The Morningside Mustangs are 18-4 right now and 10-3 in the GPAC with two of those losses coming in the span of three days in losses to Mount Marty on January 9 and Concordia on January 12.  Since those two losses the Mustangs have won a three point decision over Northwestern and a seven point win over Doane.

Jamie Sale’s team is averaging 74.4 points per game and allow 61.0 points per game.  The Sioux City, Iowa based school holds a 39.0-34.8 rebounding advantage and they make 43.5 percent of the shots they take from the floor while allowing 39.3 percent shooting.  40 percent of Morningside’s shots from the floor are three-point attempts.

Chelsie Trask is averaging 13.7 points per game and has handed out 58 assists in 22 games.  Trask leads the team with 48 three-point baskets made and she is converting 40.7 percent of her three point tries.  Ashlynn Muhl is good for 11.3 points and a team high 7.1 rebounds. Hanna Blum and Shelby Beaudette each score between seven and eight points per game.

The Morningside men are 11-12 overall and 6-7 in the GPAC.  The Mustangs had a three game winning streak snapped by Doane on Saturday after reeling off wins over Mount Marty, Concordia and Northwestern.  Morningside is 3-3 in 2013 and is 3-3 in road GPAC games. 

The Mustangs are averaging 76.9 points per game while giving up 74.9 points per outing but they are getting outrebounded 36.7-33.2.  The Mustangs make 44.1 percent of their shots but opponents are making 47.3 percent.  The Mustangs have forced 381 turnovers while giving the ball up 272 times.  The Mustangs take 40 percent of their shots from the three point line.

Danny Rudeen is the leading scorer with a 19.6 points per game average and he makes 37.7 percent of his three-point shots and has made 49 three-pointers.  Tanner Miller is scoring 10.5 points per game and has 69 assists while Trent Miller has a team high 140 assists.  Rudeen takes down 5.5 rebounds per contest and Tanner Ferguson is just under ten points per game with a 9.6 average.  Ferguson leads the team with 50 three-pointers made.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 13-10 this season and 7-6 in the GPAC with seven games remaining.  The Defenders have won two games in a row and four of their last five games.  Dordt is 6-2 since a December 15 win over Briar Cliff and are 8-3 since December 8. 

The Defenders average 70.6 points per game on offense and are limiting teams to 61.7 points per contest.  Dordt converts 41.1 percent of their field goal attempts and are holding teams to 38.2 percent success.  Dordt outrebounds teams 37.5-36.1 and has made 380-548 from the free throw line while opponents have gotten to the charity stripe 459 times while converting 300.  Dordt has taken 418 three-pointers as a team and have converted 148 for 35.4 percent success.

Kara Van Dyke is the leading scorer with a 13.4 points per game average and she is the top rebounder with 7.6 per contest.  Kayla Broekhuis knocks down 12.4 poitns per game and tops the team with 45 made three-point baskets.  Brianna Spronk’s average is 11.1 and she has five rebounds per game and has a team high 52 assists.  Elise Maresh contributes 10.1 points per game and gets 5.7 rebounds.  Jasmin Schelhaas is converting 7.5 points per game and Danelle Boone’s average is 6.4.  Boone has made 32-64 three-point baskets this winter.

The Defender men are 17-5 this season and 9-4 in the conference with seven games in the league remaining.  Dordt is 2-2 over its last four games and 8-2 in its last ten.  The Defender losses have come to Doane, Midland, Nebraska Wesleyan, Dakota State and Mount Marty. 

The Defenders score 79.5 points per game and allow 68.1 points per outing.  Dordt is shooting for 49.7 percent success and opponents are making 42.2 percent.  The Defenders also make 39.1 percent of its three-point shots and opponents are making 34.1 percent.  The Defenders have converted 347-516 free throws and foes have made 247-360.  The Defenders outrebound teams 39.8-30.4.

Cliff Warner is scoring 15.4 points per game and has a team high 81 assists in 22 games played.  Trevor Wolterstorff scores 14.2 points per game and tops the team with a 6.8 rebounds per game average.  Wolterstorff is making 58.2 percent of his field goals while Warner is making 47.4 percent of his three-point shots.  Jordan Vogel is converting 12.0 points per game with 63 percent success and Chris Sievers makes 9.5 points per game with 3.9 rebounds.  Austin Katje adds 9.2 points and Kyle Lindbergh is at 6.0 points per game to go with 6.0 rebounds. 

NEXT… Dordt travels to Briar Cliff on Saturday afternoon while the Mustangs go to Midland.

LAST TIME… The Morningside women had to fight off the Doane Tigers in GPAC play on Saturday.  The two teams were tied 40-40 at halftime before the hosts were able to pull away for a 78-71 win.  The Tigers held a 40-35 rebounding advantage and were forced into 21 turnovers.  Morningside converted 27-63 shots from the floor and were 9-22 from the three-point line.  Lacey Lehmann led the team with 16 points off the bench and had four rebounds.  Chelsie Trask knocked down 14 points and Ashley Muhl scored 11.

The Defender women pulled away late for an 80-63 win over Nebraska Wesleyan.  Dordt converted 21-59 shots and were 34-36 from the free throw line while Wesleyan converted 22-50 shots from the floor.  Dordt had a healthy 38-29 rebounding advantage and forced 23 turnovers.  Jasmin Schelhaas and Kara Van Dyke both had 14 points while Kayla Broekhuis and Jaimie Kok both had 12. Elise Maresh and Jessica Jelsema both had six rebounds.

The Morningside men battled down to the wire but came up short against Doane on Saturday.  The Mustangs had a couple shots to either tie or take the lead in the game on Saturday but couldn’t get the shots to drop before falling 68-66.  Tanner Miller scored 15 points while making 6-21 field goals.  Danny Rudeen and Tanner Ferguson each had 11 points and Jared Kolbush each had nine.  Doane outrebounded Morningside 37-34 and made 28-73 shots including 9-28 three-point baskets.  Doane converted 26-47 shots from the floor against the Mustangs and Doane committed 15 turnovers while Morningside had just four.

The Defender men handled Nebraska Wesleyan 97-68 after getting up 46-40 at halftime.  The Defenders were topped by Cliff Warner’s 18 points and he made 5-9 three-pointers.  Chris Sievers  had 17 points and Trevor Wolterstorff put in 16 with eight rebounds.  Jordan Vogel scored ten in limited time due to foul trouble. Kyle Lindbergh led Dordt to a 45-22 rebounding advantage with 12 rebounds.  Dordt made 35-60 shots while Wesleyan was limited to 25-57 shooting including 9-31 field goal shooting in the second half.

SERIES… The Morningside women lead the series 41-11 and won a 64-62 decision on December 12.  Brianna Spronk scored 16 in the losing effort while Kayla Broekhuis tossed in 13.  Ashlynn Muhl and Bobbi McManaman each had 18 while Chelsie Trask scored 13.  Dordt was outrebounded 31-28 and made 20-47 field goals while Morningside was 27-51.

The Defender men trail the series 16-12 but won the first meeting of these two on December 12by a 70-63 margin.  Dordt made 23-53 shots and converted 20-26 free throws.  Morningside was 25-70 from the floor and got outrebounded 53-30.  Dordt was bothered by turnovers with 25 and Morningside committed just 10.  Cliff Warner had 21 points while Trevor Wolterstorff had 12 with nine rebounds.  Chris Sievers converted 11 points and had nine rebounds.  Tanner Ferguson and Tanner Miller had 11 and 10 points respectively.
