Final Two Games of the Season for Dordt Blades

The puck drops at…7:30 pm on Friday, February 1 and 7:00 pm on Saturday, February 2 as the Blades finish up their season with a pair of games against South Dakota State University. The Friday game will be the final home game in the Vernon Arena for Dordt College and the Blades will travel to Mitchell on Saturday for their season finale in the Larson Ice Center.
“Who are they?”…SDSU has been a consistent opponent for the Blades over the years and both teams were previously a part of the NCCHA conference. The Jacks are 9-4-0-1 on the year with a 7-2-0-1 home record. SDSU has tallied 63 goals this year and have been scored on 43 times.
The Jacks top two point getters are Kaleb Juntunen and Hunter Anshutz who both have 22 points. Juntunen is the top goal scorer for SDSU with 14 markers to go along with 8 assists while Anshutz has 12 goals and 10 helpers. Josh Snyder and Tom Novak both have 16 points and Dylan Schreckenberg and Zach Fischer round out the double digits scorers with 15 and 14 points respectively.
Four different goalies have spent time between the pipes for the Jacks with Michael DesLauriers posting 314 minutes in goal with a 3.43 goals against average, a .900 save percentage and a 2-3 record. Gil Haugan has 202 minutes tending the goal with a 4.74 GAA, a .880 save percentage and a 2-2 record. Tyler Lawrence is a perfect 2-0 in goal with a 2.00 GAA and a .860 save percentage with Nick Dulas picking up just 23 minutes in net.
The Blades…are 3-16 this season and are 2-8 against MACHA opponents. Dordt has been scored on 96 times this season and have tallied 39 of their own. The Blades are 3-3 at home and are still looking for their first win on the road.
Brandon Fast is leading the Blades in both goals and assists with eight and eleven respectively for a total of 19 points. Eric Huitsing, has seven goals and seven assists for 14 points and Eric Walter has two goals and nine helpers for eleven points.
Riley Braun has spent every minute in goal this season for the Dordt College Blades and has made 691 saves so far this year with a 5.05 goals against average and a .878 save percentage.
The Series…the Blades and Jackrabbits have gone head to head 26 times since 2004 with SDSU enjoying an 15-11 advantage in those contests and the Jacks have won the last 6 outings against the Blades.
Last time out…the Jacks dropped a pair of contests to the University of Minnesota-Duluth on January 18 and 19 by scores of 7-3 and 4-1.
The Blades dropped a set of games to the University of Nebraska last weekend, falling on Friday by a score of 6-3 before falling by a 5-1 margin on Saturday.
After This Weekend…the 2012-2013 season will come to close for the Dordt Blades.
New conference affiliation…the Dordt Blades have joined the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) which has schools in two separate divisions (Gold and Silver) and Dordt College will be a part of the Silver Division. Western Conference schools include: Iowa, Iowa State, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Missouri State (D3), Kansas, Nebraska and Dordt.
The top two teams from the North, Central and West will make the playoffs, plus 2 wild card spots decided on winning percentage. Lewis, Western Illinois, Nebraska and Dordt are all probationary teams and therefore will not be eligible for playoffs in 2012-2013.
The Coaches…Bill Elgersma returns for his fourth season behind the bench for the Blades. Elgersma helped lead the Blades to their 3rd ACHA National Tournament appearance in 2009-2010. Before taking over the reins in 2009-2010, Elgersma served as the assistant coach. Assisting Elgersma again this season will be Adam Jeninga (6th year) and John Langeraap (4th year).
