WELCOME BACK…a special welcome to the players competing in the junior varsity vrs. Alumni contest on Saturday and the 1987-1988 NAIA National Tournament team members and coaching staff returning for the 25th anniversary of a season that ended in the quarterfinal round of the single division NAIA tournament with a 25-5 record. The 1987-1988 team will be recognized at halftime of the men’s game on Saturday.

Two members of that team, Greg Van Soelen and Kevin Veenstra,  will be recognized as members of the 1,000 point club.

Van Soelen established several records that still stand.  He is the career leader in points with 3,104 and rebounds with 1,123.  He scored at least double digits in all but one of his games played for the Defenders and Dordt was 76-35 in the four seasons Van Soelen played from 1984-1988.

Veenstra played from 1985-1989 and scored 1,275 points and ranks 10th all-time currently.  He also took down 562 rebounds and helped the Defenders to a 78-33 record in his four years with the team.  Veenstra was a major player in helping the Defenders back to the District 15 finals in 1989, one year after the quarterfinal round of the 1988 NAIA National Tournament.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Hastings women are 13-12 overall and 8-7 in the GPAC and have won four of their last five games with victories over Midland, Northwestern, Doane and Dakota Wesleyan in that string.  Hastings had a four game winning streak early in the season November 20-November 28 but have lost two games in a row on four different occasions.  The Broncos have scored more than 80 on two occasions and they have scored less than 70 points in 17 of their other contests.

Hastings is averaging 63.2 points per game and allow 63.4 points per outing while converting 36.6 percent of its field goal attempts.  Hastings is making 26.2 percent of its three-point shots and nearly a third of the Broncos shots have come from behind the three-point arc.  Hastings has outrebounded opponents 39.3-37.0 and they have forced 471 turnovers through 25 games while turning it over 471 times.
