Dordt Hosts Dakota Wesleyan Basketball

GAMETIME… Dordt College will host Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, February 6 in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball.  The women’s contest starts at 6:00 and the men will get underway at 8:00.   The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu. SCOUTING REPORT… The Dakota Wesleyan women have been the surprise of the GPAC season so far with an 18-8 overall mark and a 9-7 league record.  Wesleyan was picked to finish eighth in the pre-season poll and have spent most of the year challenging for the fourth or fifth spot.  The Tigers suffered a costly loss at home against Mount Marty on January 23 that dropped them a notch in the battled and are currently in sixth place.  The Tigers have won four of their last six after suffering back to back losses to Northwestern and Hastings on January 9 and 13.  Dakota Wesleyan has lost two games by more than seven points with the rest of the losses coming in narrow fashion. 

The Tigers average 75.0 points per game and allow 63.7 points per contest while converting 45.2 percent of their field goal attempts and allow opponents just 39.6 percent success.  Wesleyan is getting outrebounded 37.8-34.8 but make up for it with 39.4 percent shooting from the three-point line.  They have also forced 522 turnovers while committing 384 in 26 games played.

Kim Johnson has enjoyed a banner season with an 18.4 points per game average to go with 5.5 rebounding and she is making 52.9 percent of her field goals.  Celeste Beck has come off the bench in all 26 games this season and has an 11.3 points per game average and is making nearly 50 percent of her field goals.  Amanda Hart is good for 11.0 points per game and has made 78-194 three-point shots this season.  The guard has attempted just 54 shots inside the arc and is making 40.2 percent of her long shot attempts.  Elizabeth Lamb converts for 9.1 points per game and has handed out 64 assists while Taylor Piper leads the team in assists with 80 and she has 39 steals.  Brittany Hills has a team high 58 steals to go with 7.2 points per game.

The Dakota Wesleyan men are 13-13 this season and 8-8 in the league and are playing some of their best basketball of the season right now.  The Tigers have won four of their last five after dropping five of six from December 29 to January 20. 

Shane Murphy’s team averages 77.1 points per game and allows 75.0 points per contest while outrebounding teams 38.3-33.8.  Teams are making 45.3 percent of the field goals they take against Wesleyan with the Tigers converting 46.7 percent of their shots.  Turnovers are just about even with 364 for foes and 362 for the Tigers in 26 games played.

Jalen Voss knocks down 14.7 points per game with 57.6 percent shooting from the floor and he also takes down a team high 10.2 rebounds per game.  Aireus Stephenson is scoring 13.7 points per game with 27 made three-pointers and he has a team high 74 assists.  Mike Lee completes the double digit scoring with a 12.6 average and he has converted 92-108 free throws.  Carde Pennington is scoring 9.5 points per game and Bo LaCroix is good for 8.0 points per game. 

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women got a much needed win on Saturday to snap a three-game losing skid and got above .500 overall with a 14-13 mark while lifting the GPAC record to 8-9.  Dordt is involved in a three-way battle for sixth place in the conference with Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings.  Hastings has four games to play and Dakota Wesleyan three as does Dordt.

The Defenders score 69.2 points per game and opponents are at 64.2. Dordt holds the slightest of edges on the glass with a 36.7-36.2 advantage and they make 41.2 percent of its field goals to 39.5 for opponents.  The Defenders have forced 553 turnovers and have turned it over 521 times.

Kara Van Dyke leads the team with a 13.5 points per game average and she has a 7.4 rebounds per game average to go with 48.3 percent shooting from the field.  Van Dyke has converted 29-67 three-point shots as well for 43.3 percent success.  Kayla Broekhuis is averaging 12.8 points per game and has made 57-142 three-point baskets for 40.1 percent and she has 42 steals and 35 assists in 22 games played.  Brianna Spronk is averaging 11.0 points per game and is averaging 5.2 rebounds per game and she tops the team with 66 assists and 56 steals.  Elise Maresh is scoring at a 9.4 per game clip and takes down 5.0 rebounds.  Jasmin Schelhaas and Danelle Boone average 7.1 and 5.9 points per game respectively.

The Defender men are 20-6 this season and 12-5 in the GPAC and are 11-3 since December 12.  The Defenders have an 11-0 record at home this season and are 8-0 in GPAC play at the De Witt Gym.

Dordt is averaging 80.0 points per game while averaging 68.8 points per game and they hold a 39.2-30.7 rebounding edge.  Dordt converts 49.9 percent of its field goals and 38.6 percent of its three-point shots with opponents making 42.7 percent of their field goals.

Cliff Warner is scoring 14.8 points per game with 97 assists in 26 games and 30 steals.  Warner has converted 94-207 three-point tries for 45.4 percent success.  Trevor Wolterstorff is scoring 13.9 points per game and is taking down a team high 6.6 rebounds per game while converting 56.5 percent of his field goals.  Jordan Vogel is good for 12.9 points epr game and he is converting 63.9 percent of his field goals and is averaging 4.8 rebounds with 24 blocked shots this season.  Austin Katje has lifted his scoring average to 10.3 points per game with 3.7 rebounds and he is making 37.3 percent of his three-point shots.  Chris Sievers has lifted his scoring average to 9.7 points per game with 53 percent shooting and Kyle Lindbergh’s scoring average is 7.0 and his rebounding average is 5.9. Shawn Keizer and Tyler Wolterstorff have averaged 4.7 and 4.5 points per game respectively.

NEXT… Dordt will travel to Concordia to face the Bulldogs on Saturday, February 9 while the Tigers visit Nebraska Wesleyan.

LAST TIME… The Dakota Wesleyan women won their game with Midland on Saturday 77-69 at the Corn Palace after leading 37-29 at halftime.  Amanda Hart led the Tigers with 18 points while Brittany Hill and Kim Johnson each had 17 points and four rebounds.  Wesleyan was outrebounded 47-32 but forced 18 turnovers and committed 11 while converting 10-21 three-point shots.

The Defender women came from 31-24 down to win 73-66 on Saturday over Hastings in Sioux Center.  Kayla Broekhuis scored 19 and grabbed ten rebounds with an assist in the win.  Brianna Spronk and Jaimie Kok both had 14 points and Kara Van Dyke had 12 with seven rebounds.  Spronk had eight rebounds and five assists with two steals.  Dordt converted 47.1 percent of its field goals and held Hastings to 24-61 shooting and Dordt had a 37-31 rebounding advantage.
The Wesleyan men pulled away from a 34-30 halftime lead to win 81-69 Saturday night.  Jalen Voss scored 20 and had 11 rebounds in the win while converting 8-11 field goals.  Mike Lee added 15 and had two assists while Carde Pennington had 15 points and four assists in a reserve role.  Luke Bamberg and Aireus Stephenson both had 11.  Wesleyan held a 33-27 rebounding advantage and made 28-48 shots for 58.3 percent success while Midland was limited to 27-64 shooting for 42.2 percent success.

The Defender men trailed Hastings early by 11 points on Saturday but closed the gap to 39-33 at halftime.  Dordt scored the first 12 points of the second half and led by as many as eight.  Hastings led by a point on several occasions late but Dordt got a pair of free throws by Trevor Wolterstorff for the lead and a three-pointer by Cliff Warner after a defensive stop put the Defenders up by four and was eventually enough to give them a 79-76 win.  Dordt got 17 by Jordan Vogel and he had four rebounds.  Trevor Wolterstorff had 15 points and Chris Sievers 14.  Kyle Lindbergh got to 10 points and six rebounds and Warner had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes of play.

SERIES… The Defender women trail the series 34-23 after losing at the Corn Palace on November 28.  Dordt led that game 49-46 at halftime but were outscored 49-35 in the second half and lost 95-84.  Kim Johnson went for 30 and Celeste Beck 23 as Wesleyan converted 59 percent of its field goals.  Spronk had 23 for the Defenders and Broekhuis 21 in the loss. 

The Defenders hold a 31-30 series lead and won the November 28 meeting 95-78 after leading 43-39 at halftime.  Trevor Wolterstorff and Cliff Warner had 21 each and Austin Katje added 18 as Dordt converted 33-58 shots and had a 29-26 rebounding edge.  Mike Lee topped Wesleyan with 20 points and Aiereus Stephenson had 19.  Dordt also got 11 points each from Chris Sievers and Shawn Keizer.
