Dordt Hosts Senior Day Doubleheader

GAMETIME… Dordt College will host Doane College in a Senior Day doubleheader.  The women’s game will start at 2:00 and the men at 4:00. There will be a video webstream available at www.dordt.edu/athletics.  The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu.  Results will be available at https://twitter.com/dcathletics  and at www.dordt.edu/athletics when complete

SENIOR SALUTE…The six seniors involved in the women’s and men’s basketball programs will be recognized immediately after the women’s game is complete at about 3:40.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Doane Tigers are 6-21 overall and 1-18 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference after a win over Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday night.  The Tigers won five games in a row before dropping their next 21.  The Tigers battled the top teams in the conference recently, dropping a 70-65 decision to Northwestern on February 9 and they absorbed a 78-71 loss to Morningside.  During the losing skid that went from November 17 to February 9, the Prairie Wolves lost ten games by nine points or less.

The Tigers have been outscored by an average of 67.2-60.1 and hold a 37.5-35.6 rebounding advantage.  Doane is making 38.4 percent of its field goals and opponents are making 41.0 percent.  The Crete, Nebraska based team has struggled with turnovers this season with 593 turnovers in 27 games while opponents have turned it over 481 times.

Hannah Dostal is averaging 11.3 points per game to lead Doane while Shelbi Bittinger is good for 8.5 points with 4.3 rebounds.  Brittany Luettel has a 7.8 points per game average with 4.1 rebounds and Heather Broman has a 5.9 points per game average.  Savannah Lohmeier tops the team with 3.5 assists per game and Dostal averages nearly two steals per game.

The Doane Tiger men are 21-8 this season and 11-8 in the league and have lost five games with their last win coming over Concordia on January 23.  The Tigers won nine games in a row to start the season and were 15-2 before Christmas.  The Tigers are 14-2 in games played at home and 7-6 in road games.  The Tigers have scored as many as 103 points this season and have been held to less than 80 points on 16 occasions.  The Doane men could finish anywhere from third to seventh in the conference depending on the outcome of the games Saturday.  Doane is currently ranked no. 24 in the NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll.

Doane is averaging 78.8 points per game and allow 73.0 points per outing while outrebounding teams 35.2-32.7.  Doane is converting 48.9 percent of their field goals while allowing opponents to make 45.0 percent of their field goal attempts.  Doane has turned it over 432 times through 29 games while forcing 382 turnovers by opponents.

Nick Reed leads the Tigers with 17.1 points per game while converting 48.2 percent of his field goal attempts and he averages 5.9 rebounds per game.  Connor Beranek scores 16.4 points per game and takes down 8.1 rebounds and has converted 51-109 three-point shots  and has 33 blocked shots.  Shavontae Samuels has a 13.6 points per game average to go with 4.1 rebounds and is handing out 4.5 assists per game while converting 49.7 percent of his field goal attempts. Dominique Smith has scored 12.5 points per game while appearing mostly in a reserve role.  Jens Scholl knocks down 9.5 points per game with 4.7 rebounds per game.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 15-14 overall and 9-10 in the conference and are 2-4 in their last six games.  Dordt is 7-6 since Christmas and is 5-4 in the conference at home and 4-6 in the league on the road.  The Defenders had a two game winning streak halted with a loss on Saturday to Concordia.

The Defenders have outscored teams on average 68.9-64.8 and have outrebounded teams 36.9-35.9.  The Defenders limit teams to 39.7 percent shooting and are making 41.5 percent of the shots they attempt.  Dordt has turned the ball over 566 times to 577 times for opponents and they are converting 35.9 percent of the three-point shots they attempt.

Kara Van Dyke has a 13.1 points per game average to go with 7.3 rebounds and she is converting 47.9 percent of their field goals.  Kayla Broekhuis scores 12.8 points per game with 4.4 rebounds and she has made 62-153 three-point attempts this season.  Brianna Spronk concludes the double digit scorers with a 10.8 points per game average and she has a 5.1 rebounds per game average.  Elise Maresh is scoring 9.8 points per game with 5.0 rebounds and Jasmin Schelhaas is averaging 7.0 points per game.  Spronk tops the team with 73 assists and 60 steals.

Dordt is 22-6 this season in men’s play and 14-5 in the GPAC and have secured the second spot in the regular season GPAC race.  Dordt was no. 13 in the most recent NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll.  The Defenders have won three games in a row since an overtime loss to Northwestern and is 6-1 since January 16.  The Defenders have won six games single digits and have lost three games by single digits including two in overtime.  Dordt is 12-0 in games played at the De Witt this winter and is 10-6 on the road.

The Defenders are averaging 80.1 points per game and allow 69.0 points per contest while outrebounding teams 39.3-30.5.  Dordt converts 49.7 percent of its field goals and make 38.7 percent of their three-point shots.  Opponents are making 43.1 percent of their field goal attempts.  Oddly, Dordt and its opponents have tried the same amount of three-point shots, 517, with foes making 34.0 percent of those attempts. 

Cliff Warner averages 14.9 points per game with 2.8 rebounds and is making 45.5 percent of his three-point shots and he has given out 107 assists in 28 games.  Trevor Wolterstorff is good for 14.3 points per game and is making 56.9 percent of his field goal attempts and leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game.  Jordan Vogel converts 13.1 points per game with 5.3 rebounds and he is shooting for 64.0 percent success from the field.  Austin Katje completes the double digit scorers with a 10.3 average and he takes down 3.7 rebounds per game.  Katje has 44 three-pointers and Warner 102.  Chris Sievers has lifted his scoring average to 9.6 per game with 3.6 rebounds Kyle Lindbergh has 7.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds and Shawn Keizer is at 4.6 points per game with 26 made three-point shots.

NEXT… The Dordt men and women will advance to the GPAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday, February 20.  The Defender women will go on the road for the first round game while the Defender men will be at home for the quarterfinal round and the semifinal round if they advance.  The Doane women will not advance to the eight-team field while the Doane men will qualify for the tournament but don’t know if they will be at home or on the road.

LAST TIME… The Doane women trailed Nebraska Wesleyan 30-26 at halftime on Wednesday but outscored the hosts 36-27 in the second half for a 62-57 win.  Hannah Dostal had a team high 27 points with seven rebounds.  Doane held a 42-26 rebounding advantage and took advantage of 17-22 free throw shooting and 5-9 three-point shooting.

The Concordia women beat Dordt 87-64 last Saturday after trailing 32-31 at halftime.  The Defenders had a 41-33 rebounding advantage in the loss but surrendered 29-66 shooting.  Elise Maresh had 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss with Jaimie Kok coming off the bench to score 11 with six rebounds.

The Doane men were down to Nebraska Wesleyan 36-24 at halftime and never made a serious run at the Prairie Wolves on Wednesday night before losing 75-58.  The Tigers made 22-48 shots and held a 31-25 rebounding advantage but they gave up 20 turnovers while forcing just 10.  Shavontae Samuels had a game high 22 points with four assists and five steals.  Nick Reed and Austin Benson had 11 and ten points each and Connor Beranek had 11 rebounds and eight points.

The Defender men led Concordia 47-35 at halftime, saw their lead shrink to three and ended up winning by an 84-73 difference.  Trevor Wolterstorff scored 25 points with nine rebounds and Cliff Warner added 15.  Jordan Vogel had 14 points and ten rebounds and Chris Sievers came off the bench for 11 points. 

SERIES… The Dordt women trail the series by a slight 9-8 margin and won the November 17 meeting by a 55-46 margin after getting up 31-16 at halftime.  Elise Maresh scored 12 with six rebounds while Kayla Broekhuis and Jaimie Kok had ten points each.  Brianna Spronk tossed in nine points and had 11 rebounds.  Doane got 12 points by Brittany Luettel and Shelbi Bittinger scored nine.

The Dordt men lead the series 12-5 with Doane winning the November 17 meeting in Crete 86-70.  Dordt was ahead early in the second half by a 51-40 margin but couldn’t hold the lead.  Dordt led 35-32 at halftime but were outscored 54-35 in the second half as Doane dealt the Defenders their first loss of the season.  Cliff Warner had 23 points and two assists in the loss while Jordan Vogel had 21 points and five rebounds.  Trevor Wolterstorff had 11 points and eight rebounds.  Doane was paced by Nick Reed with 25 points and he was 14-15 from the free throw line.  Shavontae Samuels had 19 points while going 9-10 from the field and Jens Scholl chipped in with 17 and Dominique Smith came off the bench to score 14.
